These are some very disturbing poll results:<br><br><a href="http://ncronline.org/NCR_Online/archives2/2006a/032406/032406h.htm" target="_blank">http://ncronline.org/NCR_Online/arch...06/032406h.htm</a><br><br><img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/greensad.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="greensad">

The article is very disturbing. However, I find your thread title disturbing as well.<br>
"Christians support torture" is a generalization. You cannot claim an entire group supports anything.

I didn't title the thread "all Christians support torture," but the poll does reflect that a large number do. I was very surprised and saddened.

I'm surprised and saddened that you aren't listening to a Christian's feelings on this. If I started a thread about African-Americans supporting something negative, or Wiccans supporting something negative, or Breastfeeding mothers supporting something negative, even if it was backed by a poll, I am sure many people would rightfully complain.<br><br>
There is no one defining authority on what Christianity is. To say "Christians support torture" is insulting to all Christians who believe torture is wrong. You can make your point and share this disturbing study, but you are instead chosing to be deliberately provocative. <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/greensad.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="greensad"><br><br>
ETA: I'm not telling you that you have to change your thread title. I just want you to understand why I, as a Christian, find it misleading.

I'm not a Christian, but I find the thread title slanderous as well. I would suggest altering it somewhat, perhaps "Why do these Christians support Torture?" or "Torture is Un-Christian" or something, yk?

Please do change the title of this thread. Its insulting to many Christians who don't support torture.<br><br><a href="http://www.christianitytoday.com/ct/2001/113/25.0.html" target="_blank">http://www.christianitytoday.com/ct/2001/113/25.0.html</a><br><br><br><div style="margin:20px;margin-top:5px;">

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought Christianity was a world wide brother & sisterhood. No such thing as nations, walls, boundaries etc.<br>
So if American X-tians support torture as you said, then they aren't x-tians.

What??? They surveyed Americans! Religious and cultural idenitities intersect. No way do Christians in the USA and Christians in Canada or South America or wherever view torture in the same way. Not identifying that they were looking only at Americans is pretty ethnocentric, imo.

I would agree. Using Christian as an identifier is painting with an extremely wide brush. Were over half those polled women? The women support torture! If they were all Americans, then Americans support torture. Wait, they were all people. HUMANS support torture!!!

ok well on the actual topic, which is the article....It's pretty freaking scary to me that so many people approve of torture here in the US and how many of those ID as Christian. Regardless if think that such things are Christian or not these people obviously think that their support of toture is compatible with their Christianity.

I have tried to edit the thread title, but have not been successful. I have asked the mods to edit the thread title, so please no more flames. I didn't mean to be offensive, just provocative. My apologies to all I've offended.

I am a believer that doesn't support many forms of violence.<br><br><br>
BTW: Secular in many christian circles simply means not Christian.
