We are interested in cutting down monthly expenses and want to know which way we should go. We currently have landline phone $38.00 (without long distance service), Cingular wireless family talk (around $70- mine is more for emergency and bet/me and DH). We are trying to decide whether to have VOIP or just cell phone or keep landline and prepaid cell phone.
Even in our landline phone- we don't get many phone calls but I like to peace of mind of 911 access and occasional fax.
I would like to have cell phone but it is for emergency use.
I heard from one or two folks that one Vonage VOIP service having dropped calls and not clear reception at times in my area. Also I don't know how they do with 911 situation. (I'm interested in Sun Rocket voip).
Do you like what you have? Any pros and cons?

Do you have cellphone only?
cell with landline
cell with voip
prepaid cell w/ landline
prepaid cell w/voip
no cell with landline
no cell with voip

THanks.

I cannot wait until our cable company gets it together and starts offering cable internet with VOIP for a good rate.

Right now, we have a regular phone with unlimited long distance and DSL thru AT&T, no cable or dish, and no cell phone. (Okay, we do have a prepaid cell phone that we NEVER use.) Our phone bill is about $70 per month.

In my world, cell phones and cable are not neccesities. I would only get cable if it was basically free with my internet service, and I plan on keeping my no/prepaid cell phone for the foreseeable future.

We have Vonage for home phone service (have since 10/05) and prepaid phones through Virgin Mobile for cell service. We don't have the unlimited plan through Vonage, just the 500 minutes a month and have still never come close to using them all. It's about $17 a month and we spend about $5 per month for each of our cell phones. Can ya tell we don't talk on the phone much?

I put "cell phone only" and "other", because while we only have Cell Phones that we pay for, we do take advantage of SKYPE for free computer-to-computer calls and calling 800 numbers. This is limited to my brother and some of my boyfriend's coworkers at the moment - I'm trying to get my parents on Skype but they don't "get it", I will need to show them in person I think.
MTA: here is info on how Vonage operates 911 services: http://vonage.com/features.php?feature=911

Landline with no long distance....$30 a month.
Two cell phones, 700 anytime minutes, free mobile to mobile...around $70 a month.

DH calls his out of state family (with same cell phone provider) free, so this has saved us over $100 a month EASILY. We keep the landline only for the kiddos social lives and because our cell service is hit and miss in the house (you have to sit on the back porch, breezeway or right here at the computer to talk).

Cell phone only. $60/mo. I have 10 My circle numbers I can call unlimited + 900 anytime minutes/mo. So far I haven't used all my anytime minutes because I rarely call outside my circle.

My DH and I each have a cell phone. We are thinking about adding a 3rd cell phone for the kids (would only be an additional $10/mo.). We got rid of our land line about a year ago and I have not regretted it at all. It is so nice to not have telemarketers interupting our evenings!

Landline $24/month.

Dh has a cell phone through work that they make him carry and they pay for. I'm not interested in having a cell phone.

We have Sun Rocket voip only.

We pay $34 a month, flat-rate for unlimited long distance phone service and DSL high speed internet.

Included in this rate were two telephones.

We have been happy with it. Not ecstatic, but happy.

Sometimes the voice quality is not 100%. Sometimes our phone will drop calls -- but that happened far more often when we had a cell phone.

I make a LOT of long distance calls (all to Florida!) and so this saves us a ton of money, so we are going to stick with it.
