We went to the local rec center today, had been swimming for about 40 min went into a different part of the pool and what did we find? Poop!! Disgusting! I am so grossed out and kinda freaking out that my son was exposed to it. I am also pissed that the poop escaped at all.

Anyway, I showered my son immediately after, and he had only been exposed to it for about 10-20 sec before i saw it. But i am worried about him catching something from the exposure. How worried should i be? I don't think his head was in the water, but he was in up to his neck. We have some vax's, but not for hep A, which is the thing that keeps popping into my head, what should I do, if anything at this point? Please give me some insight!!

It's happened to us at our local YMCA pool more times than I'd like to think about. I agree, it's gross, and it's sad that some parent was paying so little attention to their child as to not notice it.

However, I doubt you have much to worry about. The public pools are so heavily chlorinated that any bacteria from the poo probably isn't surviving. Unless your son ingested a lot of the water immediately surrounding the poop I wouldn't worry at all.

Yeah, I wouldn't worry either. First, there is TONS of chemicals, not much can survive. And second, the child/infant who pooped is MOST likely vaccinated, so MOST likely not going to be carrying something you can vax for anyway. There is a very small percentage the child is not vax'd and an even smaller percentage that the vax didn't 'take' meaning the child is carrying the disease anyway, so I really wouldn't worry. DD has no vaccines, and we've been in the same situation. I just took her out and showered her right away and it didn't really cross my mind again. HTH
