Didn't take him long at all...

ROME (Reuters) - Pope Benedict, in his first clear pronouncement on gay marriages since his election, on Monday condemned same-sex unions as fake and expressions of "anarchic freedom" that threatened the future of the family.

The Pope, who was elected in April, also condemned divorce, artificial birth control, trial marriages and free-style unions, saying all of these practices were dangerous for the family.

you really did not expect that view to change, did you?
it's been this way for 1000s of years.

I doubt that will ever change with many religions.

My ILs are Methodist & they & their church totally condemn Gay rights & they have a Lesbian DD
: . She moved to a different state as not to "embarrass" them
:
they are Deacons/Deaconess' in their church & need to uphold a certain public persona
ugh...part of the reason we do not ever talk to them

dangerous to the family :LOL

I just don't get that phrase. Has he been taking lessons from the American religious right?

In what way does it endanger my family? Your family? The family down the street? Can someone explain to me how someone else's choice on who to marry affects me at all?

...and just what is wrong with "anarchic freedom" anyway? :LOL

OT - united methodists have no problem with gay rights, they just don't want gay people preaching. Used to not be that way, I knew quite a few gay methodist ministers when I was growing up.

I don't know which type ILs are but I know their church is a "Don't ask, don't tell" BS

NO one mentions about gays there.

I believe that's when you live together specifically to test out whether you'd be good as a married couple, without the intention of making it a legal/spiritual marriage at that point in time (but would consider legal/spiritual marriage in the future).

It is impossible to be for anyone's rights "in private". Rights are only recognized and respected when people demand it publicly. Shame on anyone hypocritical enough to quietly say they are "for gay rights in private" and then meekly go along with hateful public policy and rhetoric like this.

And shame on Benedict

Yeah, it's been a year in MA with gay marriages, and people are just rioting in the streets everywhere you go. It's total chaos here. I think I need to move.

Personally dh and I are threatened that other people might enjoy the same privileges that we get by virtue of our "conventional" marriage. We had second thoughts about getting married in the first place, because I'm black and he's white. We didn't want to add to the chaos.

I'm so not surprised by the pope. I think he's going to take the church back 1000 years, without the cool garb.

If I remember correctly, the Catholic Church has *not* always viewed homosexuality the same way -- as with many other issues, the Church has changed its position (mostly when it's politically expedient to do so, I think). I'm sure Daryl would have more to say on this

I guess if you do not like the beliefs of a certain church/religion.. don't go. pretty simple.
some things & people (like my super religious Methodist, anti- gay, racists ILs
: ) will never change.

This new Pope was not gonna change anything that has not been been for a few 1000 yrs. Did anyone really think different?
None of the things mentioned in the OP was ever approved by the Catholic church.

I'm not surpised & I have a choice whether I go to that church or not. So does everyone else.

Yeah, why is this even news? Now, if he had said "yes" to artificial BC, gay marriage, trial marriage, etc......*that* would have been news.

Why are people waiting for the Catholic Church to change? (Yes, I know that not everyone wants it to change.)

Honestly, from the beginning of his "rein" I have wondered if there was going to be a big deal "line in the sand type thing." Basically saying, "The Catholic Church believes blank, blank, and blank, if you don't like it get out. If you want to stay in then start preaching blank, blank and blank."

Much of the Catholocism practiced in America seems so different than the Catholocism coming out of Rome, or in South America, etc... It will be interesting to see if *Eventually* there is another splintering of the RCC.

Polka it has been pointed out already that the Catholic Church has NOT held this particular dogma for "1000s of years". It has already changed once, if not more times.

It makes a discussion much better when all partcipants inform themselves, especially when specifically invited to do so.
