"Up to 70% of files exchanged between Saudi teenagers' mobile phones contain pornography, according to a study in the ultra-conservative Muslim kingdom.

The study quoted in Arab News focused on the phones of teenagers detained by religious police for harassing girls.

The same researcher also found that 88% of girls say they have been victims of harassment using Bluetooth technology."

I wonder if this holds true among most teenagers... or if it's more prevalent in a more closed, sex-segregated society?

It seems off to me, just because the sampling they have is not just any teens, but teens who are also inclined to "harass girls."

Not all teens harass girls. Not all teens in Saudi Arabia harass girls. Right? So the sample they've picked is a sample that is already more inclined to particular anti-woman behavior. (Not possible to do the chicken-or-the-egg thing ... is the porn a harbinger of the harassing, or is the harassing a harbinger of the porn.)

So yeah, 70% of files exchanged on these particular teenagers' phones were porn? Not surprising.

If they would take a sample of kids who were *not* so accused (of the harassment) and got the same statistic, well, then, that would be something.

Rushing and rambling, hoping that made sense ...

Yes, merpk that's the first thought I had as well.

However, I seem to recall seeing something months ago about how porn is very popular on teens' cell phones in the states--it's the only way they have to get porn that their parents won't find out about. The family computer is too public, but the phone is theirs.

I wonder too how they are defining "porn". I would expect that the definition might be somewhat broader than how we define it.

This was my thought as well! I bet the definition of porn they are using would involve things that seem really innocent to us.

I agree with the flaw at looking at teens who've been caught harassing girls... but what worries me is where the 88% of girls being harassed figure comes from?? That's pretty darn high.

As for porn definition... I thought the same thing... but then I tried to find the original article on the Arab News site... and couldn't... but did find this one http://www.arabnews.com/?page=1&sect...d=6&m=7&y=2006

"....he was shocked to find pictures and video clips of naked women involved in all types of lewd behavior. The girl rejected the youth’s proposal saying a man’s cell phone represents the mind of the owner."

Sounds like their definition of porn may match ours.

How exactly can one be harrassed via bluetooth technology?

Bluetooth is just a wireless technology. I wonder if these phones can share pictures or movies or something and lack good control over what you allow to come over.
