Dh and I were going to a movie Saturday night, our first night out together in months. I was driving on the interstate and we were just talking, and I kept feeling the need to swallow. I felt like drainage was going down my throat. My mouth started to taste funny, so I looked at my throat in the rearview mirror. There was blood pretty much pouring down my throat. I pulled over so dh could drive. When I leaned up to get out of the car, it came pouring out of my nose. We decided to head to the emergency clinic, but a few minutes later, it stopped. We went on to the movie, and right before it started, I felt it in my throat again. I went to the bathroom and just sat with my head forward so it could all come out of my nose. It went on for a few minutes and then stopped. I went in and watched the movie and that was that. However, I researched it online and it looks like posterior nosebleeds are rare and can be dangerous. I couldn't find anything about just a one-time incident. Has anyone experienced anything like this?

When I was pregnant with my first Ds. I had nosebleeds like that following a sinus infection. It came and went for four months no one seemed too worried until the day when it didn't stop...then they freaked out. I don't remember what they did because i was a bit out of it but it got fixed somehow. And I had a nose full of bloody snotty cotton for a good week. The concensus was it was caused by broken blood vessels due to PIH.

Thanks Becca. That makes me feel a little better. I read so much online that said how dangerous they were and all the horrible things that could cause them. Things like brain tumors and diabetes. After the nosebleed, I did have some intermittent stuffiness in my sinuses. I have heard that this type of nosebleed can get serious really quick if the bleeding doesn't stop.

Do you smoke or drink alcohol (as in heavy drinking)? Or, do you use cocaine?

These things can have a devastating affect on your sinuses and inside your nose.

My Dad had this happen to him twice a couple of years ago. Had to call 911 and go to the hospital for a couple of days. They cauterized the broken areas and sent him home from the ER, but then it broke later that night so 911 again and then the stint in the hospital.

He was, and is, a heavy smoker (3 packs a day) and drinker (several martinis). They told him he had to stop both, or the next bleeding episode could be waaaaay worse.

He refused to quit either habit, and has had some more bad nosebleeds, but not like those. No more hospital trips (I don't think he'd go again anyway
).

Anyway, he is the only person I have known to have this happen.

You might want to contact an ENT (Ear, Nose, Throat) specialist just to check things out.

Hope you are feeling better!

:LOL No to all of the above. I just had to laugh at that because it is so not me. Well, actually in college I did smoke and drink a little, but that was a good 10 years ago. On Friday, ds has a ped appointment and I'm going to ask him if he thinks I should see an ENT. That sounds so scary about your dad. I read that these things can be dangerous.

I've had 1 nosebleed in my life. I don't know if it was posterior or what, it was coming out my nose and some was going down my throat. I was sitting on the floor watching tv and it felt like my nose started to run so I went & grabbed some kleenex and there was blood all over it. I went through 10-12 paper towels or so. After 1 1/2 hours I started to get that lightheaded giddyness so I called dh at work and told him he had to come home. He called a friend and had her come too. Dh was at home for 10minutes or so when I decided to go to ER. By the time I got there I felt very weak, had a hard time standing and was getting to an irritable point because I didn't want to answer their questions. They got me to a bed, put ice on the back of my neck. My GP just happened to be working in ER that night. I remember feeling like I was going to pass out and getting po'd at him for asking stupid questions like how much blood did you lose. I told him it was in a bunch of paper towels, I couldn't measure it. He came in a few times and had to shake my foot to get me to respond to him. It stopped after another hour or so, it lasted 3hours in total. He figured it was due to the air being dry(it was the middle of winter). He said that having a cold can cause it to happen, but I wasn't sick when it happened.

Usually they'll cauterize the bleeders to get it to stop and then pack your nose full of gauze. Thankfully I didn't need that, but they had talked to me about the possibility of having to do it. That was 1.5 or 2.5 years ago, I run the humidifier in the winter to keep moisture in the air.

I have had several that have came out my nose and just he one last night that ran down the back of my throat until I realized what it was. Even with leaning forward it didn't come out my nose until I bent all the way over the sink in the bathroom. It wasn't much blood though. I am going to try and keep my nose moist and see if it helps.

A few years ago I kept getting nosebleeds, it was a strange thing. I had my nose cauterized(?) a couple of times actually with the burning liquid on the cotton swab. It was never the amount of blood that I have read on here or never lasted near as long. It was when I hadn't had a period in a long time.

I am wondering if I am running a quart to high or something again
, that is what I told DH. I am thinking I am going to keep my nose moist and see if I can get the courage to go give blood. Seems really strange, but maybe it would help.
