Hi Mama's,
I don't think I've ever posted here before, but I've got a question for you all. DD and I put a potato half in and half out of a glass of water, and the bottom half grew roots and the upper half started to sprout, so we decided to plant it in a pot and the sprout things (which are growing out of the "eyes" I guess) are getting really big and tall. Kinda like a thickish stalk with small green leaves. We were just sort of doing a little experiment and wondering what would happen... So that's my question I guess (forgive my ignorance): what's happening? If we replanted in a larger area would we actually be able to grow more potatoes? Or is this just kind of a cute little experiment but not how potatoes are grown? Clearly I have no idea.
Any replies would be much appreciated!

Potatoes are SO easy to grow. My 4 yo dug a hole put a potatoes in and it grows LOL Ive thrown rotten ones out and they grow.

So yes dig a hole cover all but the green plan and dig it up when the plant browns and dies away. If you keep putting more dirt on it as it gets higher...the more potatoes you get.

Oh neat, I'm definitely going to try as well. I have an old bucket lying around; I nailed a few holes into the bottom of it a few days ago. I have been keeping an organic potato in a paper bag, waiting for it to show some sign of growth. From what you're saying, I guess I could fill my bucket with dirt, and throw the potato in there already.
Would it give the plant a better chance to be in the sun ? In the shade ? Half-half ? Do we harvest in, say, october ?
I love this gardening thing, it makes me feel so... productive !!
