DS has been getting rashes no matter what diapers we use, so we leave his diaper off a lot. So things would be a lot neater at home if we start potty-learning a little bit (he's 19 months). But I don't think he's really ready to handle the amount of control and initiative it would take for him to use the potty at school. Will it confuse him if we use the potty at home and diapers at daycare, for now?

Hi! I don't have any words of wisdom but I'm hoping someone else does! My DS is two months shy of 3yo and we're in underwear at home (except in bed) but he's still in diapers at his Montessori Preschool. They told me to put a pull up under his underwear for school but I haven't done it yet...and he knows the difference! He knows, though, that as soon as school's out he is in his undies. <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/smile.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="smile">

My dd is 22 months and she uses mostly underpants (cloth trainers) at home and wears diapers at daycare. She only goes to daycare 2 days a week though (with grandmas the rest of the week). I do notice we have more accidents after she's been wearing diapers at dc, but overall I don't think it's a big deal.

Kids are very adaptable and pick up on context well. We EC, and though we've not had to use daycare/school before "graduation," many families who EC do also use daycare, and their babies can know the difference between caregivers who will take them to the potty and caregivers who will wait to change the diaper. If you don't stress on the matter, and keep potty use fun (at least as much fun as diaper changes!), you can't help but move forward.

Ds was older than yours but we did just that. He was almost all the way potty-learned at home and still in diapers at daycare at about 2 yrs. He then started saying that "I use potty at home" when asked about pottying at school. He was very shy and wouldn't even think of letting his caregiver/teacher take him to the potty. He didn't really start using the potty at school until he could do it himself. It didn't really make for any more accidents at home. For him their was a distinct reason he did not use the potty at school and why he would use it at home.
