I don't know if this belongs here or in Toddlers, but here goes.
DD is 15 months old. We recently taught her the sign for "change" and in "diaper change." So she has been doing the sign when she needs her diaper changed, and so we, of course, change it. She did that for maybe two weeks. Then she started doing the sign while she was pooping. Then, yesterday morning, she woke up and I took her diaper off to change it, but she didn't want the clean diaper on. So I said, okay, that's fine, we'll take a shower now. Well, then she did the diaper change sign, and I thought, well, that's weird. She doesn't even have a diaper on. So I thought maybe, just maybe she was saying that she had to poop. So I sat her on her potty which she has never used, but has played with for a couple of months, and she pooped almost immediately. I was shocked.
This morning when she woke up, I sat her on the potty again, and she peed almost right away. Then, later in the afternoon, she did the diaper change sign and after I went and got her diaper bag, she pooped in her diaper.
So, does she really get it? Am I totally fooling myself and this is all coincidental? I reallly don't want to pressure her or anything, but man, even one less poopy diaper a day to change would be awesome.
Should I try to encourage using the potty or is she too little to know how to hold it?
OMG, she just woke up from her nap and I asked her "do you want to sit on the potty?" she pointed to it so I took off her diaper, sat her down on it and she peed almost immediately!
Go check out the EC forum and www.diaperfreebaby.org. Even little-bitty babies can start "holding" it for awhile. It sounds to me that your daughter has decided that you're doing EC whether you were planning to or not
.
Basically, with EC, "elimination communication", a child who is too young to take care of their own potty needs lets a parent (or other adult) know when they have to go so they can get help using the potty. In younger babies this is done through signaling by various means, grunting, squirming, fussing, older babies who have been taught potty-signs may sign their needs, and incredibly brillant babies like Ani, well, they use the signs they have available to clue mommy in!
That is utterly fantastic for you! If she's fairly consistent you could even try getting her regular underpants that she can pull down herself and see how she does. You also could try teaching her the sign for "toilet."
We have been working on the "toilet" sign, so hopefully she will pick that up in the next day or two. She loooooves to sit on the potty which helps!
I'm a little afraid of putting too much pressure on her to use the potty and scare her away from it. I try not to get too excited and jump up and down when she does it, but man it is HARD not to!
That's a great story, I'm going to pass it along. So cool how she made the connection between the sign and the act of eliminating, instead of just the diaper change. I know, it's hard not to get excited and heap on the praise, I think it's better though just to give them a big smile and go about your day together.

Yeah, it is pretty cool. I hope that she keeps it up. It's nice that summer is coming up so she can be naked more often and be outside more.
I first heard about ec when I was about 81/2 months pg with Ani and thought it sounded cool, but just didn't think I could handle it without more research that I didnt' have time for.
So do you think I should get some pull-ups or something? Is there anything cloth I could use? I'm totally new at this, can you tell? LOL
I don't have any advice. I just wanted to say "Good going, Ani!"
Hope this trend keeps up. These kids really do understand a lot at 15 months, if you ask me.
Ani,
I just wanted to commend you for picking up on her cues, and acknowledging her desire to not poop in the diaper.
You can find cloth training pants at www.theecstore.com. They would be desirable over disposable training pants because she'll be able to feel when she goes. But if you will use disposable, I would recommend disposable training pants over disposable diapers at this point.
Congratulations!
