What's wrong with a public restroom? I seriously don't understand the objection. How is using a public restroom 'grosser' than pooping in a little potty that you bring along and then have to clean out? Or 'grosser' than digging a hole?
FWIW, we camp frequently. If we're car camping and staying in a campground with either plumbed bathrooms or pit toilets, we use those. When car camping with toddlers we did bring along a baby bjorn potty, mostly for use in emergencies while driving. But we kept the little potty outside the tent, so we could use that in the middle of the night if necessary. My kids also learned how to potty outside (while hiking or backwoods camping) when they were fairly young.
We also camp often and just use the restrooms at the park or go au naturale if we aren't near civilization (mostly this involves "#1"). I also don't understand the disgust with the public restrooms?? Do you use them in stores or in rest stop/gas stations on long trips? I feel like we would be so limited if we carried a potty everwhere to avoid public restrooms.
i don't really get it either. where would he poop if he was 5? where do you poop? if you're worried about cleanliness you can put some toilet paper on the seat or bring along an insert just like you would in any other public restroom.
we do always carry a small potty in the car wherever we go, and even my almost 6 yo has used it in a pinch if there's absolutely nowhere else to go, and we do bring it camping and like the pp keep it outside the tent for middle of the night emergencies.
Dig a hole or bring the little potty and then dump it in public restroom and clean it.
Ds was scared of the giant bottomless compost toilets at the campground.
We just went camping, but we had mil's motorhome so he went in there. They did have a public bathroom that wasn't my first choice, but it was there and usable.
I'm with the "What's wrong with the public restroom?" camp? I honestly don't see that there's anything more disgusting about them than any other public place. (There are a number of studies showing most doorhandles are actually grosser than public toilets! Have you stopped opening doors and pushing elevator buttons?) If you're really worried about sitting on germs take along some wet wipes and wipe down the seat before you sit.
The only issue I see with public restrooms and pooping is that a small child can't put their feet on the ground, and it's easier to poop with feet supported. If that's an issue I'd go for the training potty + wet wipes.
You can buy the disposable paper seat covers in packs of 5. I bring them along on car trips (I swear they are not in rest stops west of Idaho). Those and Wet Wipes, soap, hand sanitizer, the works.
Camp ground toilets can be pretty disgusting and I will not lean over the stench to wipe my sons bottom or have him put his hands all over the seat. At 5 I'm sure he'll be wiping himself and be able to be more careful about touching the seat. Yeah that is way more disgusting than bringing a potty with us. Thanks for the suggestions

I am having flashbacks to holding DD (3 days before her 4th birthday) cradle-style (like a groom holding a bride) over a port-o-potty toilet so she could pee (thankfully and miraculously not on me) at our city's Fourth of July bash on the waterfront. Imagine more than 100,000 people using the allotted honey-buckets ALL day.
Yeah, it was baaaaaaaaaad but ya do what ya gotta do. YUCK.
