In response to a local OP Ed piece, http://www.poughkeepsiejournal.com/a...=2005506190310

A friend of mine has organized a Nurse In to occur on July 13, starting at 4:30 pm in front of the Paper's Offices. We are waiting on getting approval from the City to "gather", so please check back here to confirm the day and time.
It is hoped that this will help raise awareness that NIP is not a sexual act or indecent etc.. Our babies do not need or want to be fed in a restroom.

If you cannot or do not wish to attend, but want to show your support.. we came up with the idea of a Nursing in Public day where we would ask that people would nurse in public a bit more than they usually do. You don't have to be indescrete.. just do what you feel comfortable with.. but don't "hide" in a restroom etc... It is hoped that this will help raise awareness about nursing in public.

If you have any questions etc, please feel free to PM me. If I cant' answer them.. I'll forward them off to my friend who is organizing this.

Please feel free to pass this along and get the word out..

Thanks

Not to be a poop here, but I thought I'd give you the view from inside a newspaper. I couldn't care less (and I think I speak for my colleagues in the newsroom) about the opinions of blowhards who appear on our op-ed pages. If someone protested outside my place of employment about a piece that appeared in that section that wasn't staff-written, I would be puzzled. Frankly, I think you would be better served having the nurse-in outside Ms. I Forgot Her Name's Rhinebeck law offices.

Hey
Thanks for your thoughts

I am not organizing the nurse in. I suggested the lawyor's offices, but my friend explained she felt that the area in front of the Paper's offices was more central, would give better visibility and b eeasier for people to find.

We are not protesting anything.. nor faulting the paper for printing the editorial. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. That is what makes this country great.. that we can express ourselves without fear of being put in jail etc...
We are having a nurse in to raise awareness.. that NIP is not an indecent act.. that the breast is for feeding.. first and foremost.. and that it is our society/culture that has made the breast a mainly sexual object..

That, in a nut shell, is the logic behind the choice of location..

Have you given the paper a chance to respond, or asked for equal time for a response in the paper? Those would probably be much more positive reactions to that horrible article. You may also want to find Janet in Canada's post about why nurse in's are NOT always the best reaction to anti-breastfeeding stupidity.

i hear what annettemarie, janice in canada and others are saying about not drawing attention to these idiots. however, i think that right now, NIP is in the headlines more than it has EVER been before (at least that i know about) and i think its great if we can keep it going! i bet yall that 2 months ago, most people didnt even know that there were people campagning for bfeeding rights- now the word lactavist has been used on VH1! how cool is that?! IMO, lets keep it in the headlines, ladies!

ftr i havent been trained in pr or anything, its JMO

I completely understand your enthusiasm. As a matter of fact, I admire it.
That said, my worry is that if lactivists start getting involved in a lot of negative protest-type activities, we stop appearing cool and peaceloving and mama-ish, and start appearing shrill and militant and something to be made fun of. I love what they are doing Seattle. Rather than a protest, they took that whole Ken Whosie-Whatsit thing (see- I can't even remember the idiot's name!) and are having a nursing "ralley" in the park. It looks like it's going to be awesome. I hope this makes sense. I am not discouraging action; I just think it is important to frame action as positive as possible. This lady is just one person, who opened her big, uninformed mouth one time. If the paper had a history of making anti-breastfeeding remarks, if this woman was preaching an anti-breastfeeding gospel all over the place, I would be right there protesting with you- Poughkeepsie (sp) isn't that far. But to give one uninformed voice all this attention- she's just not worth it.

Updates from Kim, Shaunda and Eileen who are organizing this all.. I am not organizing this.. I am only passing on the info.. so... don't kill the messenger..

>1. We have separated the Nurse-In and Nursing Day, it
seems what I thought was such a great original idea is
actualy a national movement I just didn't know about.
Promom.org is promoting and calling for Nurse-Outs all
of the country the week of July 30 - August 7 so
nursing around the county will be moved to somewhere
in that week. The nurse-in stands for July 13th.

2. While this particular diatribe was only published
in the PoJo, Jonna Spilbor is a pretty big fish, on
court TV, CNN, Fox News, MSNBC all over the place.
Sort of makes me want to have the response even
better.
5. We are going to create a yahoogroup specifically
for this purpose so that those who would like to know
all of the details can but the rest of you won't be
bothered (except for the big things... those I'll
still post) If you would like to be added to that
group e-mail me ([email protected])

6. We need to get a handle on how many people are
going to be at this before we do the press release so
if you plan on coming (again it's July 13 4:30-7:30
PM) please let me know so I can do a count. This is
not just for Nursing Moms think of it as a support
rally, anyone who wants to come we would love to be
there, I know some people will be having their
husbands, sisters and other children there. <

You can contact Shaunda at srlpenny @ yahoo.com

Boy, as a Poughkeepsie native, I really wish my parents hadn't just moved away from the area (and thus, lost my overnight accomodations in Pokie). I'd love to sit down on a bench at the Poughkeepsie Galleria and give my daughter a nice big meal!

It's a shockingly conservative area, considering it's the home of FDR.
