First let me apologize for I am sure that these questions have been asked and answered before! I'm just not the most forum literate person and my searches are not coming up with any relevant hits.

I have been pretty successful at lurking and from that tried cloth diapering on a whim when my DS was 10 months old. I live in a small town that had one store which sells Polar Babies fleece covers and prefold diapers (which I thought worked well, but the Polar Babies made DS so fat that he couldn't wear half his clothes!) They also sell Bumpkins AIO's which my husband was quite fond of so we have been successful with using those until now - 8 months later (not exclusively, but during the day we do CD). DS has outgrown his covers and is close to outgrowing the AIO's. Our financial situation has changed, so purchasing a stash of AIO's might not be the most economical option for me, but I do know that I would like to continue CDing!

I have a couple of questions that I know someone will be able to answer.

First, if I used a fitted diaper with the Polar Babies would it be a trimmer fit? This sort of confuses me. I found a store that sold fitted diapers, and I found a website with a pattern on making fitted from pf's, so I thought this might be a good way to go but I don't really know if I am fully understanding the difference.

Another question would be, after doing some research on some of the links of places to buy diapers, it looks like a different type of cover is recommended with a fitted. I did buy a couple of wrap covers (Snapi-wrap I think they were called) but again, wasn't sure. On the Polar Babies website they have a specific cover they recommend for fitted.

My last question (sorry so lengthy) is why is powdered detergent preferred? I actually just read that and have not been using powdered detergent.

Thanks so much for your help! I've honestly been inspired by this web site and have definitely adopted a much less mainstream parenting philosophy because of it (which I am very thankful for)

I had no idea powdered detergent is preferred! I have always used liquid. I had been told liquid is better for the long life of a washer. I am not really familiar with polar baby covers, so no help there. Sorry.

Polar Babies are fleece covers. Very nice and work well as far as no leaks, etc, and I really don't know if they are the cause of the problem or if it is that I am folding the prefold and making it bulky. hmmm..

I always thought that liquid was better too. I actually read it on the tag of the covers I bought today and when I did research on laundering of diapers in general I did see where it says to use powdered. I can't figure out why.
