I know it's normal to have more hair loss than usual for a while after giving birth, but I feel like I am losing WAY too much hair. I will shower and pull out more hair than I lost when my hair was long! Also I shed all day long.

And my son was born in December, and it just started about 3 weeks ago. I have been under EXTREME stress since he was born, due to a hospital visit and some remaining health problems.

I had my thyroid checked a coupl emonths ago and they say it was fine. Had it checked again a few days ago, no results yet.

I don't remember it being this bad with my first. It almost seems like my hairline is receding, getting bald spots near my temples, but it's *always* been thin there, so I'm not sure if I"m imagining it.

What's "normal"?

When did you start losing hair PP? How long did it fall out more than usual? And did it seem like a LOT more hair?

Can extreme stress on its own cause hair loss?
I am also itchy on my hands and feet and face.

I think I've just finally stopped losing an absolutely ridiculus amount of hair and I'm 7.5 months pp. It was coming out in handfulls for several months, like I swear I could make a birds nest with it every day. My back would be completely covered after I washed my hair. I didn't really shed the entire time I was pregnant or for the first few months pp, but wha bam, once I started loosing it, it was intense! It's kind of frightening isn't it?!?!

And yes, stress can cause you to loose hair, as can malnutrition too.

Im curious to know what others have to say. I too had a baby dec 7th of 2006. And my haor just started falling out about 2-3 weeks ago also. I also have gotten little tiny zit like bumps all over my arms and legs, I had them after my last pregnancy too. I think it may have to do with my horomones trying to regulate, but im not sure. Its sure is super annoying! I am just taking my daily vit. c and making sure to take my multi vites. Im not sure what else to do other than keep brushing and throwing out the hair! I just wait it out and eventually it stops;-)

It usually starts around 4months pp and can last a few months, but is usually done by 9-10months.

Some people can lose alot others not as much, but it all depends on how thick your hair was before. If your hair is quite thin you're going to notice that it seems you are going bald. Some women say they lose half their hair, but they may not have alot to begin with. Whereas people like me who have enough hair for 3-4 people lose probably the same amount but it doesn't show as much because they have lots to spare. I was losing my hair last year and not from pp as my youngest is now 5 years old.lol I lost it over 7-8 months, thyroid tests came back normal. I lost at least 1/4 of my hair. I could tell from just dealing with my hair on a daily basis(plus finding it everywhere, lol). It was about the same amount that the hairdressers take out when they thin it for me. On someone else, losing 1/4 of of their hair would make them look like they're balding.

DD had that problem after her second baby. She takes biotin and silica complex and she said it got much better after just one week. HTH

with both of my babies, i had lots of hair loss for several months (with most recent baby, from about 2 1/2 months until 5 months pp) and thought i was going to end up bald because it was so extreme. fortunately, i'm not bald and the hair loss has stopped completely. i'm getting it all back in the form of tiny little hairs all over my head, mostly in the front hairline. it's lovely!

DD2 was born in Oct and I'm still going through the extreme hair loss. I have very thick hair, I have lost at least 1/4 of my hair, if it doesn't stop soon then I'll be cutting it much shorter. I had hair loss with DD1, but it was nothing like this. I am just pulling chunks out every day, DD2 is covered in it, I find it in her mouth, in our food, it is everywhere.

Wow. You mamas dont' know how much better you made me feel. It was REALLY starting to freak me out.

It *seems* as if it's tapering off a bit. I've noticed the last couple days I haven't pulled out quite as much, even though I went through the hassle of straightening and blowdrying my hair, which always makes it seem like I'm losing more hair than usual.
