With my first 3 pg's I was really good about taking my pre-natals. I bought mine from the local health store. This pg I have yet to buy them. I am taking my folic acid and a children's vitamin. Is this bad? I try to eat healthy but have also struggled with having much of an appetite this pg. Do I need a kick in the pants to go and buy some pre-natals?

Go get the pre-natals. The children's vitamins do not contain enough vitamins. I use the Safeway brand as it has exactly why a pre-natal should. In fact, I never come off it. It's a great multivitamin and I will stay on it for as long as I am pregnant there's a chance I could get pregnant.

I am embarrased to say that all 3 pregnancies (this one included) I forget to take my prenatal vitamins all the time. I know it's not great but I have a mental block when it comes to daily vitamins. I am not sure what to do about it.

I took prenatals faithfully beginning 3 months before we started TTC, and then it took 19 months to conceive (still can't quite believe it's true!!
) so I feel I built up a good "storehouse" of nutrients during that time. I'm glad, because swallowing pills has been difficult for me when nauseated. Now I'm taking them only when I feel totally okay, which is to say once or twice a week. My midwife says this should be fine. I'll resume taking them daily when the nausea passes...soon, I hope!

I took them while TTC. During this PG I have thrown up within minutes every time I've tried to take one, so I gave up. I eat childrens chewables, folic acid, and B12.

You don't need to get the entire RDA for everything in a prenatal, you know...you can get it from your diet, too.

I think that the whole take-prenatals-or-your-child-will-be-deformed thing is a little silly. Really, does our food count for nothing? Maybe if you're eating at the vending machine every day, you'd REALLY need the prenatals, but most of the mamas here on MDC are probably lacking very little in their diets.

I am the same way this preg and I feel really guilty. Also, my diet was much better before the horrible 24/7 morning sickness. I am taking folic acid, the occasional b6 and b12. Swallowing them is hard as it stimulates my gag reflex.

I need to go get some.

My midwife has suggested that I take a Flinstones along with my B-6 until I am past the nausea stage. Which is fine with me. I have prenatals, but I can't do the not eatting and not sleeping thing again. Now that I already have a kid to run after, that won't work well. But taking the Flinstones, and my b-6, I can just take it easy.

Anyway, I would suggest just get some prenatals when your feeling well, better late than never. I actually didn't take them much with my ds. I got them at 12 wks, and only took them until 16 wks, made me SO sick, and the naval hospital didn't have a different kind!

Good luck!

I have been on a childrens chewable (Costco brand) for two years since I had a gastric bypass surgery (no flames please!). I have been taking folic acid since we decided to TTC. Since I've been pregnant, I have cut down on my chewables (used to take two, now I take one) due to high levels of vitamin A, I've stopped taking the folic acid, and I now take a pre-natal (same level of folic acid as I took before).

We have an all-natural multi-vitamin that I had been taking but it was making me feel worse during this pg. So the other day I cut one in half and took and all was fine. So that is what I am going to do for now.

I think taking prenatals is a good idea or some sort of vitamins, but I know of mamas who couldn't stomach them during pg and had healthy babies. I told my np about my vitamins making me sick and she said that as long as I kept taking the folic acid, that would be fine. Then to try the vitamins again later.

When I remember to take mine I take New Chapter Prenatals which are whole food probiotic vitamins which means I don't have to remember to atke them with food. The only problem is the suggested dosage are 4 tablets. UGH... four big tablets a day - do you see my aversion to taking them???? They are also super expensive but I have a stash of them already because I live overseas so My Mom sent me a few bottles already. The regular prenatals my Dr. prescribed are synthetic and they make me constipated which is not good for the hemmoroids - which already popped out and Hemmamalis is not helping me. Anyhow has anyone taken these and is 4 the required amount or can I take 2 a day and be alright. Maybe if I know that I only have to take two I will not purposely forget to take them.

does anyone here know of a prenatal that doesn't have copper???

I have looked and looked and haven't been able to find any.

I had tested previously for high levels of copper and some other metals and I really need to avoid ingesting any more.

fiercelove, there's nothing magical about a vitamin because it is labelled "prenatal". It is a marketting strategy. Many times multivitamins that are labelled "prenatal" have dangerous amounts of some vitamins, especially A. You can find your own multivitamin of any sort, by printing out a list of recommendations for pregnant women (the RDA list for pregnant women is different from that for the general adult population) and comparing it to the contents of other multivitamins. In my case, I take my children's chewables, and then also a small folic acid vitamin because the children's chewables do not have adequate folic acid. I like that this way, I'm not getting large amounts of things I don't need, like vitamin A or iron.

They have! I took a 5 day sampler box and they weren't half bad. Not chocolate, kinda fruity.

I've been trying different kinds to see what I like. I don't really know how much of what should be in them. Anybody feel like giving a run down???

Another thing I was wondering.....can you od on folic acid?? Or will your body just flush it?

I stopped by a drs. office and asked if they would write me a prescription for pre-natals and the dr. was nice enough to give me samples of ICar prenatal vitamins. I take 2 chewable calciums in the morning, 1 pre-natal vitamin with minerals and folic acid at night, and a fish oil 1000mg w/ omega 3 fatty acids at night.

I was taking a regular multi-vitamin prior to the pre-natals.
