I was admitted to the hospital last night for some pre-term labor. I was having some contractions with low back pain that were coming every 10-12 minutes, so the OB sent me over to the hospital for an evaluation. Apparently most of the labor was silent because I was actually contracting every 3-4 minutes and they were "significant". My uterus is very large due to the multiple pregnancy and the muscles are stretched to the point where the sensation of the contractions is lessened. After 9 hours there was no change in my cervix, and no PROM so they sent me home.
I was given an injection of terbutaline to stop the contractions and it worked fairly well after one shot. They will give up to 10 injections of this drug in 1/2 hour increments to stop preterm labor. It is nasty stuff. It makes you feel like you are on the worst caffeine high ever. Shaky, jittery, racing pulse. Yuck. I can't imagine taking all 10 injections! I was also tested for every conceivable bacteria or virus that might contribute to pre-term labor, and had the FFN done. So far everything is negative.
They have no idea why I am contracting, but as long as the babes say active, and continue thier clockwise turning, I should have 2 vertex babies! Right now they are sort of transverse, but heading in the right direction. I am not thrilled at the prospect of going back any time soon, but I am contracting again today despite being on the couch with my feet up. Since I am only 29 weeks they want to exhaust all the therapeutic options before allowing the labor to really get going. Since my FFN was negative it doesn't look like delivery will happen any time soon, but they did say they would offer me steroid shots if I exhaust all of my other options.
At this point I cannot have a vaginal delivery (2 transverse babies) and the boys would require WEEKS in the NICU, so I am hoping nothing more comes of this. Wish me luck. I need a nap!

I hope you are getting your nap! Drink tons of water and keep those feet up! Let other people do your bidding.

If you are having no changes in your cervix you may be just fine. I contracted for months, sometimes regularly and I had a cervix which was considered "short" starting at 23 weeks, yet I went to 40w3d.

Sending you stay-in-babies vibes!!

You can do it Momma!!!
I went into preterm labor with my twins at 28 weeks. I spent the next 6 weeks on bedrest (partly at home, partly in the hospital), and I have also taken terbutaline (horrid stuff) along with nifedipene and magnesium sulfate.
But, the good news is my babies stayed in until 34 weeks. Of course a full term delivery would have been even better, but it was sure better than delivering at 28 weeks.
Peace to you Momma! Keep your feet up and let others take care of you!

Don't do anything you don't HAVE to do and drink TONS of water. (Laying on my left side helped me too, after I drank the TONS of water.) Yes, I mean, TONS.

I was contracting now and then from about 20-odd weeks forward, yet I went to 39 weeks.

I'm sending vibes for your uterus to remain still

Good luck.

I would ask about something to relax your uterus next over a second couse of heavy medication. I had PTL contractions that warrented a hospital stay at 29W and I also had severe funneling of my cervix.

I did MagSulfate for 48 hours and then they wanted me to go on Procardia, but I was not keen on the effects it was taking on my body. I ended up on 600mg of Motrin and a weekly natural Progesterone shot. I did not do bed rest, but did limit activity. Contractions stopped and my cervix closed again.

Motrin is not suggested after a certain date for minor heart issues with the babies, but progesterone can be given up until delivery.

Good luck to you, here's hoping they stay in a bit longer!

I had some ctx around 28wks, with no changes to my cervix. I also had a shortening and funneling cervix from 26wks on. I was on bedrest until I went into labor at 34wks.
Just rest lots, try to relax, and don't do anything someone else can do instead.
