I was admitted to the hospital last night for some pre-term labor. I was having some contractions with low back pain that were coming every 10-12 minutes, so the OB sent me over to the hospital for an evaluation. Apparently most of the labor was silent because I was actually contracting every 3-4 minutes and they were "significant". My uterus is very large due to the multiple pregnancy and the muscles are stretched to the point where the sensation of the contractions is lessened. After 9 hours there was no change in my cervix, and no PROM so they sent me home.
I was given an injection of terbutaline to stop the contractions and it worked fairly well after one shot. They will give up to 10 injections of this drug in 1/2 hour increments to stop preterm labor. It is nasty stuff. It makes you feel like you are on the worst caffeine high ever. Shaky, jittery, racing pulse. Yuck. I can't imagine taking all 10 injections! I was also tested for every conceivable bacteria or virus that might contribute to pre-term labor, and had the FFN done. So far everything is negative.
They have no idea why I am contracting, but as long as the babes say active, and continue thier clockwise turning, I should have 2 vertex babies! Right now they are sort of transverse, but heading in the right direction. I am not thrilled at the prospect of going back any time soon, but I am contracting again today despite being on the couch with my feet up. Since I am only 29 weeks they want to exhaust all the therapeutic options before allowing the labor to really get going. Since my FFN was negative it doesn't look like delivery will happen any time soon, but they did say they would offer me steroid shots if I exhaust all of my other options.
At this point I cannot have a vaginal delivery (2 transverse babies) and the boys would require WEEKS in the NICU, so I am hoping nothing more comes of this. Wish me luck. I need a nap!

with a negative FFN test that gives you two weeeks that you know you're not going into labor
I know the constant contractions and terb are scary though, I went through it too. I will
: for you that those little ones stay put for quite a bit longer!

I had terbutaline with my son and it does suck. I was actually very dehydrated and not in pre-term labor like they thought though. I'm sure they checked you for dehydration.
I will send you many stay put babies vibes!!! I'll keep you and your little ones in my thoughts!

Oh mama
I have no experience with this but I can imagine how scary it must be. I'm glad your labour stopped and you've been able to return home. Make sure to rest, rest, rest! I'll be thinking babies-stay-put vibes for you.

Oh, hon.
I got really dehydrated the other night and was almost positive I was going to have to go to the hospital. I had contractions every 4-6 minutes for a few hours. I drank a ton of water, went and rested for a long time, and they eventually stopped after about 5-6 hours. I'm so sorry you had to go to the hospital.

Well, I guess the good news is, the ctx aren't changing your cervix
...so they might be "significant" but not significant enough! Try not to worry too much! Rest and take it easy!

Dehydration is NOT a problem! Not only did I drink 8 bottles of water (160 oz) throughout the day, I had 2 more while I rested, AND they hung the mother of all IV's Just in Case!
Even the nurses thought that was overkill, but hey, we did have a week of 100 degree heat, and I was up for anything that did not involve delivering the babies. I am feeling better this afternoon, but still having some ctx. The babes are very active and seem happy. I appreciate all of the good vibes. Here's to 7 more weeks!!

hey mamajody,

I had early contractions with Kai at about 32-33 wks and even though i thought i was drinking enough water i had to actually drink 1 gallon of water throughout the day. Apparently that was my problem. the thing is especially when pregnant is once you are thirsty that means there is already min dehydration. AND since it is sooooo darn hot ( and i live in florida) i just drink the entire day. I havent done it this time around yet however when pregnant with kai i walked around with a gallon size jug.
even if its not contributed to dehydration it cant hurt : O)
HTH

peeking in from Nov DDC to give you some big hugs! Been there, done that with two of my three boys. Have they put you on bedrest? i was on for over 10 weeks with my last, he was born at 32 weeks. The terbutalin stinks, but be glad they didn't pull out the mag sulfate big guns, LOL! that stuff is seriously the most vile thing on the planet.

It's great that you're not dilating
Did they/will they do cervical scans to be sure you continue to stay closed? this time around I'm doign the scans every two weeks to be sure that we don't have any silent dilation or funnelling from the inside out. It's such a relief every two weeks to go in and see a nice tight cervix!!

I am soooo happy they didn't pull out the Mag Sul. I was allowed up to 10 shots of the Terb. and I only needed 1, so hopefully i won't have to go there in the future either. They didn't do a scan as I get so many of them with the twin pregnancy anyway. Just a manual check. I will be back on Friday for another check, and I think they will have me in weekly from now on. My next u/s was scheduled for the 31st and I also begin 2 x weekly NST's at that time. (sigh) So much time at the hospital.
: Thank goodness DH is still out of work. Otherwise DD would be coming with me!
