I thought I knew prefolds, it's all I used with dd, but I'm so confused now. I had 2 dozen of infant size that I bought probably 3.5 years ago, I ordered one more dozen and then a couple of the premie size to see how small they are. Now it gets confusing, the old infant prefolds I have are much smaller then the new infant prefolds, the new ones are actually the same size as some old standards that I have. My old infant prefolds are the same length as the premies I just bought but 2-3 inches wider. I've bought all diapers, then and now from green mountain diapers so I'm not going from place to place. So this is my issue, I'm not expecting a big babe, dd was just under 7 lbs, DH and I are both small people, I didn't CD dd for the first couple months so by the time I did the infant size fit her fine. Since my old infant prefolds are the same length but wider then the new premies should I just forget about buying premies and use them or will the extra 2-3 inches make a huge difference on a skinny babe? And would they work in all the newborn covers that I've bought already?

I've noticed some variation between prefolds too, but I did order mine from different places. Still they were all infant 4x8x4 chinese prefolds, but they were all definitely not the same size or softness. I don't know if they started off the same sizes and some just quilted and shrunk more than others or if they were different to start before washing. Anyway, if it were me I'd stick with the infants and skip the preemies, but I have 8+lbs babies who fit very nicely into the infants at birth. Also, the preemies just wouldn't be enough absorbency and would be outgrown very quickly.
