What size prefolds do you buy for a newborn, and what are the best kind?? I want something unbleached, but what do I choose?

Also, can you dye unbleached prefolds?

So far I have 2 Nikki wool covers and 1 Biobottoms wool, all size small, will these fit over prefolds??

I just can't remember, but breastfed blowouts- when do they start, I don't think my son had them till about 2 months....

Will a snappied prefold leak out breastfed poop onto my wool covers every time?

How long can a typical newborn wear the first size of prefolds?

Thanks ladies, it's a loaded post!

I used Infant 8ply Chinese Prefolds. They were a bit bulkier than the 6-ply, but I could use them for Diaper Doublers later and they lasted longer for me. Kenny could not wear them past 4 months if they were secured around him with pins or a snappi. However, he could wear them much longer if tri-folded into a wrap - we just don't prefer that method of diapering.

I would imagine you could dye bleached or unbleached. I have a vibrant, beautifully tye dyed prefold from www.tyedyedreams.com and it was dyed using an unbleached prefold. However, I would think you would need to make sure the prefolds are washed thoroughly first or you might end up with the dye repelling due to the natural oils that are still on the cotton and also, the 'sizing' that needs to be removed. Someone correct me if this is not the case.

Someone else will have to answer that - haven't tried either.

We did not have but a couple of blow-outs and they were up the back - not out the legs. However, I want to say the really big poops start around 2 months - at least for us.

Not every time. I imagine if the prefold was wet from being peed in - the weight would pull it down and away from the legs and there is a possibility that the poop would get out. We get our prefolds really snug and use primarily 6-ply, so there are a lot of diaper changes. They don't get wet enough to do this unless we are out running erands and mommy is being inattentive.
- then, yes . . . it can be a mess even on the best pinned or snappi-ed prefold.

Depends - are you going to secure with snappi fasteners or pins always - if so, we did it with our chunk for 4 months and with Meredith for a bit more than that (she was long and lean). However, we could have easily used them (like I said above - sorry for redundancy) much longer if we tri-folded into wraps.

I used the infant sized Chinese prefolds for my last son who was 7 lbs, 13 oz at birth. They were a bit big at first but still fit fine. He grew into them quickly and outgrew them at around 3 months of age. For us the blowouts didn't start until maybe 6 weeks or 2 months of age. I never used snappis or the covers you mentioned so I can't help you with that one. And I'm not sure about dying ub prefolds, but they are a nice tea shade so I'm not sure you'd want to. HTH,

OK, this is just from my experience with my skinny-legged 7 lb newborn ...

Even the Nikky nb size cover, in wool, was too wide-cut and the gussets in the legs did nothing to prevent blowouts...the covers I liked were cotn' wrap by basic connection, the SWW, and the bumkins vented. I know these are not wool (and I do LOVE wool) but they kept the poo in and were easy to wash (well, the cotn' wrap does stain, but it was so soft and nice)

For my little one I would have been best served in the first 3 weeks by the preemie prefolds OR the newborn sized prefolds in 4x6x4 ply (a little less bulk). His butt was sooo tiny. I trifolded into a velcro cover, but if you're going to snappi you can use the newborn/infant size and just fold down. We used infant size for ds for about 8 mos, till he was about 18 lbs.

Personally, for this next baby I'm hoping to get some kissaluv size 0 fitteds from some nice folks checking my registry. Then I can use more wool covers and not worry so much about it getting on the covers. Prefolds can be attached pretty snug but it takes practice.

Oh--I meant to add, check out greenmountaindiapers and babyworks.com (carries the same diapers) I love their ub prefolds they are strong, soft, and well made! I loved them!

With dd, no matter how snugly we pinned the dipe, poop still got on the cover every single time. There was no stopping the stuff - it was runny and there was lots of it. I recall that this went on for a good six months or so (?), until she started eating some solid food. Therefore, we used cheapo PUL velcro wraps...Diaperaps to be exact. They only cost $6 apiece, and they washed out easily and didn't stain. For my skinny-legged dd, they did a great job of holding in the poop.

Around 9 months of so I switched to wool, and while I love wool, none of the covers that I have right now would've been able to hold in that runny breastfed poop. The leg openings just are not tight enough, and of course they would be seriously stained which I wouldn't like.

I used infant 4x6x4 ucpf's for the first week or two, and then used them as burp cloths once I stopped using them. My son was 6 lbs 12 oz at birth, but he's already around 14 lbs at 2 months.
I've been using infant 4x8x4 unbleached pf's since then, and they've worked out great for us. DS poos all the time, and so far, we haven't had any leaks. I snappi all the time, and I use Bummis whisper pants over that. The covers are really soft, so they're gently on newborn skin, and they're great at preventing leaks. These covers have prevented at least 4 or 5 major poo messes by catching what leaked out of the diaper (when ds did a major poo). I used the newborn covers for a little over a month and have been using small covers since then. I would recommend getting both, because the leg openings on the small covers were huge on ds at first and wouldn't have been able to prevent leaks.
I suggest buying pre-folds and covers from Colleen at naturalbabies. She has low prices and excellent customer service.
My baby just outgrew his newborn dipes at 2 months old after a major growth spurt, so I just ordered regular ucpf's, but I've definitely gotten my money's worth out of the infant dipes. I think most babies can wear them for at least 4 months.
