prefolds are just flats folded up a certain way and sewn together. If you ever unhem a prefold it turns into the size the orignal flats use to be

so the only difference there is one is PRE*folded* and the other isnt, LOL

Yup - they're basically the same, since a prefold is just a folded flat with the folds sewn in place. The beauty of using flats is that they can be folded in more custom-fit ways, and they wash cleaner & dry faster, because it's just the one layer.

I've actually had this happen to one prefold - it came unsewn.

And it is no where near the amount of fabric in a flat diaper - nor is it simply folded up a certain way and sewn.

The prefold is layers of fabric sewn together - the one I had come unstitched had 4 full layers through the entire diaper, and 4 extra layers in the centre panel.

The flats I have are a single layer of fabric, somewhat larger than a recieving blanket.

There is a LOT more fabric to the prefolds than to the flats.

what kind of prefold do you have? I have taken my prefolds apart before and they were made of a large piece of single fabric folded and sewn

also the size of the prefold will change the size of the fabric

flats were originally LOOOOOOONG and flat and you could fold them up like a prefold looks now

Yes, the 4x8x4 prefolds are much bigger than the average flat. I guess what I wanted to say was that prefolds were *invented* by sewing down the folds on a folded flat. They've been improved since, to add better absorbency. But you can still get pretty awesome results with a flat!

No idea what kind they actually are - the kind I bought at a thrift store for a quarter.

Umm - infant sized for sure (since I've since picked up 2 other sizes and both were larger than these ones).

All I know for sure - they're going to make darn good PP pads for those first few days after Bug is born !
