Prefolds?

Anyone ever make a prefold diaper?

From buying the fabric, to sewing it, to folding and placing the pins. The whole 9 yards?

I was thinking of doing it.. but how much fabric would I end up using on ONE diaper?

Just wondering if anyone out here in diapermakingland has ever done so..

if you are buying new material i would just buy the diapers. If you are using recycled material try the fern and fergie (sp) web site i think it take 2 shirts to make one diaper.
I make prefolds out of recycled as well as new materials. If you're purchasing fabric it's not necessarily cheaper at all, but I like that I can pick the size, especially the rise...we like low-riders around here! You can also choose your absorbancy which is nice. Stretch terry makes a fabulous snappi-able prefold, but it's pricey. Nice and stretchy for a great blow-out proof fit. For size preemie and infant I've liked 2x4x2 of flannel the best. The premium/toddler size is 4x8x4. The fern and faerie site is a great resource as mentioned.

I made one once, with the prefold diaper twill that http://www.diapershop.com sells... I wanted to see if I could make a "real" prefold, CPF-style. Diapershop says, "It takes about 1.125 yards to make a single 4x8x4 premium prefold, the diaper twill is 36" wide." That sounds about right... it did take quite a lot, but I got to make the ends rainbow colored instead of standard blue, so that was fun

Pain in the butt, but certainly do-able!

Thanks for this helpful thread. Is it really not cheaper to make these though? I've been really loving some expensive cotton terry prefolds I bought, and I've been thinking I could save at least **some** by making some... anyone really tried this?
Honestly you wouldn't be saving anything if you are buying the materials. Even using diaper twill you are talking over $2 a yard. Considering it takes more than a yard to make one single diaper it's just not worth it. You can buy prefolds for about $1.50.
But if you're using a thicker fabric (say, a terry), you wouldn't need as many layers, so you wouldn't use as much in yardage... couldn't this *possibly* make it cheaper??

(hm.. but as I work this out in my head, I'm figuring that sure, you might use less yardage, but you're paying more for the yardage that you're getting... so.. maybe not!!! unless of course you already have the materialss, then you can just call it a wash or something)
I used this website:
http://fernandfaerie.com/sewing_prefolds.html
and made prefolds. I used one of DH's old t-shirts for each prefold, and still had leftover material for additional doublers.

Oh yeah! I definitely think it could be cheaper if you were making the prefolds out of other materials than diaper twill... even more so if you used the really nice snappiable stuff for the outer layers and perhaps made the middle panel out of cheaper or recycled materials (since it would be hidden anyway).
