So, I thought it would be fun to start a thread sharing our mistakes from previous pregnancies in hopes that we wont do them again and maybe someone else will learn from them.

Here were my two last time:

#1: I would crave a really unhealthy food, and try to find something to satisfy my craving. Id wind up eating 4x's as much this way.
Example:
I really wanted a piece of warm, buttery, apple pie.

I ate a piece of toast with smart balance, cane sugar, and cinnamon poured all over it.
I ate an apple dipped in peanut butter with cinnamon in it.
I ate a piece of a candy bar thinking that would get my junk food craving out of the way and I would just be able to move on.
I drove to the grocery store and bought a single apple pie (the really bad for you kind in the box), came home, melted a piece of butter over it , and ate it.

I shouldve just gotten the apple pie in the first place instead of eating the 600 calories trying to appease my craving. This was yesterday, by the way. I am vowing to give in to most cravings. I want an icee. The nearest one is 15 miles away. Im not driving that far for an icee, but I might wander around the house until I realize that there is something else I need from WalMart just so I can go get my Icee.

#2: I truly bought into the idea that with the Bradley Method childbirth wasnt going to hurt that much. You can breathe deeply and relax all you want to, and it will make it better. But at least this time I know, childbirth hurts like hell. When that first real contraction hit last time, I was all like "WTF, you ladies did not tell me it was going to hurt this bad."

Anyway, just wanted to share. If you have had other kids, what did you do in your pregnancies that you would advise against?

I love those! Good thoughts.Like you said, my MW told me she was really frustrated with instructors at hypnobirthing, etc., who implied that with the right breathing/contractions, childbirth didn't have to hurt. She said it made mamas feel like they were doing something wrong when it was time!

I felt like one mistake I made was focusing too much on the pregnancy and trying to get everything right. For a month or two there, I read every pregnancy book I could get my hands on, and everything online, and obsessed about it to the point of making myself an anxiety ball. Maybe that's just the way a first pregnancy goes, though. :)

Oh I know, forewarning to all first time mom's:
When someone gives you a copy of What to Expect, put it where it goes. In the stack of stuff to give to your local goodwill. That book and a few other made me a total trainwreck for a couple of weeks.

i took way too many baths with epsom salts. i do not think it was a good thing at all. i honestly feel like it contributed to lack of real labor.

i also ate everything i could find and gained over 70 pounds with that pregnancy. i know better this time (though that did NOT prevent me from making raspberry cobbler and eating it with chocolate ice cream).

i also thought we were only going to be at the hospital for a day and packed accordingly. i didn't realize that i would actually want to put clothing on the baby while i was there, apparently. um. that also didn't work out very well.

and NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO don't donate what to expect to the goodwill. throw it in the trash where it belongs and you can keep somebody else from having to read that nonsense.

With this pregnancy, I feel a lot more at ease since I already have a natural childbirth under my belt. Last time it was always a "can I really do this, OMG, what if I freak out, I won't be at a hospital, there's no turning back" mentality to childbirth. Then when I actually DID IT I was all OMMMG I just freaked for 8 months over something that I am biologically designed to do. Woops

So this time around, I probably won't even pick up a book as a refresher. I teach childbirth education classes for our local WIC clinic. No techniques, just basic common sense childbirth. With this one I just plan to RELAX a lot more. I actually take that back, I will probably breeze through hypnobirthing again because I had good success with it with DS2.

I also gained a lot of weight previously, but have curbed my eating habits since. I eat a ton of fresh fruits/veggies which I didn't before. My only real craving is medium garlic chicken wings from my husbands restaurant, which I limit to once a week if I'm lucky enough to have him bring me a big batch home. I would like to start being more consistent with exercising, but lets face it... I'm a mama to two with a full time job.

But I do have one after baby is born change. Last time I was so freaked out that breastfeeding was going to fail after I unsuccessfully BF my first son. I stressed over things that were normal, and it bugs me to this day that I didn't enjoy those early days. We went on to successfully BF, but I wish I could have that time back and a re-do. I am now a CLC and work in the field of lactation... so if I screw that up... I might want to fire up my resume!
