My 4-1/2 loves to practice "writing." This is mostly just family names. I encourage her to learn her letters and numbers, but we don't make her work. YKWIM. She does something kind of strange when she writes things sometimes and dyslexia runs on my husbands side of the family, so I wonder if anyone else has seen their kids do this.

She will write a name in a complete mirror image. It's not only backwards, from right to left, but each letter is a mirror image too. When she does this she also draws each letter with a reversed method.

Or, she will start out going left to right, then half way through the word, she will begin to put the letters on the left side and work in the opposite direction. Like Katie becomes - EITKA.

Often, everything is in the right order too.

She doesn't think there's any difference in any of these methods. Like since she's got the right letters all mushed up together then it's right. She's only 4-1/2... I don't really know what to expect from her since she is my first child... but is this strange or normal? Has anyone seen this mirror image writing with a child? Is any of this related to dyslexia in a child so young?

Thanks for any input!

Many children do this - whole pages in mirror image. It's completely normal, although it can freak parents until they hear this! She will stop doing it when the brain reaches a certain point of development - right now it looks completely normal to her.

My 4 year old does this too.

There are so few things in life that are quite so specifically oriented as letters. I mean if you hold up a picture of a pig wheather it is facing this way <-- or this way--> it is still a pig, and the same for most any other object- a shape, a shoe, a toy- no matter how you draw them on the page they are still that object. It just takes a long time to learn the specific ways letters face, and then we have a whole slew of letters that all look just the same b, d, p, q depending on which way you put them.

I wouldn't worry about it yet!
