Present for dh birthday/going away?

648 Views 22 Replies 12 Participants Last post by  Skywise
Usually dh & I don't do birthday presents, however he's deploying to Afghanistan for a year right before his birthday. Also he will be missing the birth of our ds in late June so...I kind of want to get him something kwim?

He's an electronics guy & a gamer...although all that stuff is pretty expensive. Unfortunately I have the creative thought processes of..nothing. So anyone have ideas that won't break the bank?

Will he have computer access often? I wonder if you could get a webcam or set of them to stay in video contact between there and home? Or a digital camera?
After the baby is here you can upload pics to a digital frame.

I'm assuming he has a laptop, ipod, all that stuff that makes a deployment bearable. My DH was in Iraq from 2004-2006.

My dh always takes a laptop, ipod, and a small hand held gaming system. First time he went he took a game boy. The last time he went I got him a PSP. It was a little pricey but worth it IMO to give him something to help him zone out. Also I was then able to buy new games and put them in his care packages.
At our frg meeting they showed where he will be & basically there's nothing there yet. It's all hand written letters for the year

Normally he would have his laptop & all the fun stuff like he did his last 2 deployments in Iraq...seemed pointless to pack it now though since they'll be in tents without electric for the most part.

(((Hugs))) My DH has been gone for almost 9 months now in Iraq, and did a year in Afghanistan previously.

Anyways, in that situation I would make him a picture book and then leave some empty pages in it so that when you send new pictures he can add those into it. I think the 6x6 size books work well because you can fit one 4*6 photo on the page, have room to write a caption, and you can get niceer scrapbook paper to go pretty far because you can do 4 pages out of each 12*12 sheet.

There are mini solar chargers you can get ... works with lots of electronics!

And the little hand held gaming systems take batteries. Can you send batteries through the mail? I'm not sure but maybe you could just send him batteries throughout the year. And don't forget you can use the flat rate boxes...it's amazing what you can shove into those things!!
Ugh. I feel for you if he isn't going to hsve modern conveniences. That is how it was for DH and I spent a ton of money on food so he didn't have to eat MRE's every day.

DH always asked for more mail (letters) and I was always busy getting his care packages together. It was a lot of work to get everything he needed, put it in the package, go to the PO with kids. Don'tcha see how much I love you when you get a care pacakge?

I would really look into some solar battery chargers and battery adapters for the electric items he "loves."

(And this just might be me, but I'd honestly look into a planned C-Section, too--- and this is coming from a homebirther
Got BIL home for 3 weeks for the birth of his son).

I wouldn't. It's not worth the risk to your health and the health of the baby. (And UGH.....trying to recover from a C-section!)
Sorry your dh is leaving!!

Mmm well we really talked about him coming home for the birth & we decided it was better in the long run if he wasn't there because it would be so soon after his deployment then we would go for a really long time without seeing each other(his last 2 deployments were extended to 15 months).

And tbh imo hanging around watching a newborn vs a child a few months older is a bit boring. I'd rather he got to come home & actually spend time doing something besides being sleep deprived & watching the baby sleep & poo. I also have 2 teenage girls dying to fawn over a baby brother so that's another bonus also.

I'm keen on the idea of the photo album with blanks for future use & most likely the food also. Dh is not a mre kinda guy

Thanks again everyone.

Yeah dh actually got to have his deployment delayed for our ds's birth. So he was home for the birth and then left when ds was 4 mos old. In retrospect I realized it really should have been the other way around!

While ITA, generally, in some cases I would actually look into it. Of course, my sister had already had a c-section and avoiding one wasn't impt to her. Having the planning c-section, though, guaranteed that BIL was home for not only the birth but for three weeks after as well (since she couldn't drive and he was her primary care taker).

Well, then you're set! I'd much rather have DP around for the later parts, too. I think it's horrible that people in the service, though, have that kind of choice to make.

When my dh had to go away, I sent him a manilla envelope with individual envelopes with little one sentance love notes. One for every day. (Kind of like those inspirational calendars yk?) He loved it, it made him smile everyday. And helped tide him over till the next big letter.
The solar charger with a psp or gameboy sounds great if you could swing it.
I found this charger online for not much:

If he likes pizza, you can make the BEST care package!! Sharing this b/c it was DH's favorite of all time. This was for BBQ chicken pizza:

Boboli pizza crust
BBQ sauce
Canned chicken (kind of gross but better than MRE's)
Parmesan Cheese (canned)
Dried cilantro
Red onion

You can also send pepperoni, pineapple, get creative!

Send foil and they can put it on an engine block to heat it up!
:

Another good package had refried beans, queso, chips & salsa for the superbowl.

That is a FANTASTIC idea! I read it out to dh and he thought it was awesome too. He said I'll have to do that if he ever deploys again.

Wow GREAT ideas too, thank you! Dh likes to eat so I'll be all over those for him.

Looking into the solar charger too, thanks for the link on that also.
