What in your experience is the usual tuition discount at a private school, if any, when a parent is an employee there with a child/children attending?

I was all set to work full-time at, and send my DS to, a nice, small private school only to realize that with my small pay and his large tuition (no discount), and expenses that we would barely break even. I am so sad that we could not make this work, I know it just might have been the perfect fit for us both.

There is a discount for the children of teachers, but not for the children of assistants - which is what I would have been.

What kinds of discounts have you seen?

Last year my dd went to school (private language-immersion school) with a girl who's mother was an assistant for the 4 yo program. I remember her telling me that her dd (with whom my daughter became quite close friends) wouldn't be back this coming year because tuition went up and they gave only a 30% discount. That really stinks that they don't give a 100% fee waiver & that you don't get a deep enough discount.

The school I used to work at gave no discount for teachers or any other employee. They did take the tutition out pre-tax so the employee looked like they had a smaller salary to the IRS. I guess that was legal?

Well, my daughter goes to a private religious school, so it might be a little bit different. Also because for our religious community, the parents just don't use public schools so the private religious ones find any which way to make sure the kids can go to school -- there are a lot of tuition breaks somehow.

I will be teaching part time at the school in another grade, and I'll get a 30% break on tuition. If I were to take two more periods/day (they didn't have them available), I'd get half off. Full time gets 75% off I believe.

My husband is a private school teacher for a religious parochial school. Last year he taught Junior high, and there was no discount at all. I'm told that they are trying to change that. They do give a LOT of scholarships to his school, and I would think that the child of a teacher would probably have a good shot at one.
