but since it's a penis issue with an intact boy, I thought I'd ask here.

Ds, 5, started complaining about an hour ago that he felt like he had to urinate, but that nothing was coming out. I had him drink some water and then, try again. I went with him and he was only able to go a little. The tip of his penis is a little red, but then, it's just starting to retract a bit on its own so I don't know if that's the reason for the redness (we obviously don't pull it back or anything like that). The urination issue seems like it could be a UTI. I have no experience with males and utis, though. Any advice?

Your son may have a UTI. If you have ever had one...it's the same thing. It's painful and hard to pee. Start him on Cranberry Juice ASAP and get him to a doctor for a urine test. Try to catch the urine yourself in a sterile cup (the doctor will have them (just pick one up) or you can buy it at a medical supply store) If you don't get the sample yourself, they will want to cathitorize (sp?) him (which is painful and traumatic!) Try to avoid this at all costs!

the urine test will tell you immeadiately if he has a UTI and they will start him on an antibiotic. Let us know how he is.

Even if you can't catch it yourself and have to do it at the office, you should be able to do a clean catch with a cup with a 5 year old. Or they can baggie it if that doesn't work. I wouldn't allow cathing unless you get a positive specimin from one of those methods. It can actually cause an infection.

I get UTI's freqnetly and it sounds like one to me. That's exactly how I feel when I get one

Just make sure the doctor's don't retract him, make sure htey know what their doing if they have to cath him. And don't listen if they recommend circ to prevent UTI's. Like I just said I'm a woman, I get them frequently, and no doctor has ever suggested cutting anything off of me!

Thanks everyone! I have an appt tomorrow morning. I've never been to this doctor so I hope he/she is informed about an intact penis (one can hope, right?). But yeah, I think I'd laugh out loud if they suggested circ.

Symptoms of UTI for both men and woman are basicly the same. Feeling of needing to go pee and cant. Pain when peeing up in the tummy, reddish/dark colored urine. Treatement is exactly the same diagnois, treat with abx.

Here is the Intact Care Agreement written by Nathan1097 http://www.circumcisionquotes.com/care.htmljust in case you would like to take it with you and the AAP Care Guide to back you up.

Since he is 5yo you should be able to get a clean catch there in the bathroom. I agree no cath is needed. Even if bacteria shows up I wouldnt have the cath done since it will be very easy to get a good specimen doing it like I do when I go the old wipe with those betadine or soapy wipes.

Let us know how it goes.

I just had a thought I wouldnt even mention that he is intact since at 5yo they shouldnt want to see his parts. And nothing appears to be wrong w/ his foreskin from your description. Then after doing the clean catch and seeing if anything is there then mention it and see how different the responces will be.

I had a lot of UTI's and kidney infections as a child and infrequent ones as an adult. i don't use antibiotics for them and I wouldn't for my child. For me these kinds of infections don't fall into the category of illness that would have me using antibiotics.

Drinking cranberry juice (real stuff not cocktail) and lots of it plus lots of water is an excellent cure for UTI. You can also get concentrated cranberry capsules at a health-food store if he will swallow them. Uva Ursi tea is excellent for bladder as well.

Not trying to diagnose here but just putting it out there that you don't have to run to a doctor and use antibiotics for UTI's.

I agree about the UTI and about not mentioning that he's intact
There is absolutely NO reason why they should know that! Especially not before you determine whether it is a UTI.

love and peace.
