DD is 8.5 months old and has tried solids a handful of times, but not with any consistency. She's recently started smacking her lips when watching us eat, so I decided to try a couple of things after nursing her first.

Each time she spits up ALL of the solids and a lot of breast milk. What am I doing wrong? Should I not nurse her first-instead feed her solids and then offer the breast? I don't want to compromise my milk.

I would nurse her first. Babies her age still need your milk most of all. Some babies have a really sensitive gag reflex... and either need very smooth food, or they just need a little more time before eating food. What kinds of foods have you tried? And what was the texture?

Vomiting the foods is a sign of allergy. I'd definitely avoid giving her any solids until she starts reaching for it and putting it into her own mouth and you basically have to hold her off of your plate to be able to eat. You'll save yourself both a lot of problems and trouble by doing it that way, and likely spare her some allergic reactions and pain in the process.

Egg yolk mashed up, smooshed avacado, smooshed banana, pureed peas, pureed carrots. Nothing but very smooth food.

Does she still have a tounge thrust reflex? If so, that's a sign she's not ready for solids. www.kellymom.com has a great checklist for gauging solids readiness.

But if she's throwing it up, I'd hold off on it all for a while, especially the egg. Concentrate on getting some good probiotics into yourself and into her if you can- dairy-free, of course.

Some babies do better self-feeding table foods rather than being spoon-fed purees.

I'd hold off on solids for a while longer, and then try with finger foods rather than purees.

Egg is pretty allergenic. Definitely hold off on that, but there's no rush for any of it. She'll eat when she's ready.
