Problems getting him to nap?

456 Views 8 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  Anissina
DS does not like to nap. I'm not a fan of CIO, it's just not an option for us, but he fights sleep like crazy during the day. When he does finally fall asleep it's for no longer than 20 minutes. I haven't found anyone to give me advice that applies to us (I refuse to put cereal in a bottle for him, I refuse to CIO, etc). I don't want to force him into a schedule, but it would really help me get things done. Any tips?

Well I guess whenever I have that problem, I just stop trying to get her to nap. I just go about my day and do what I want/need to do so she's kept busy and won't get too grumpy even if she's tired. Eventually in the car or nursing she'll just pass out without a fight. Then she seems to find her own 'schedule' again and will sleep. And I don't go crazy spending time obcessing over when she will nap.
how old is he? can you wear him in a wrap/sling/carrier while you get things done?

have you read No Cry Sleep Solution? its got great ideas to help babies sleep.
He's 6.5 months. He likes the sling, but I can't workout while he's in the sling. I also have trouble doing a lot of things when he's in a sling...maybe I just stink at babywearing. I don't know how people sling while cleaning. I'll look into the book though, thanks.
If you have questions about babywearing I am not the person to ask, although the babywearing forum is great!! The people who post there are super knowledgeable and have great advice!

When Lincoln gets super tired (this doesn't always work) I nurse him to sleep in our bed with the window shades closed and just lie there with him for a while. Or, going somewhere in the car knocks him out good.

HTH, good luck! I know it isn't good for your sanity when baby doesn't sleep well!
I find I can get stuff done with my LO in a front carrier (we have a moby wrap and an ergo) but not in the sling that's just on one shoulder. I know you don't stink at babywearing, but maybe you need to experiment a bit. Have you tried swaddling? Our LO never wanted to be swaddled when she was a newborn, hated it and kicked and cried, but now at 6 months, I've started swaddling her arms for naps (not at night, for some reason she doesn't need it then) and our life has gotten a lot easier. I think she's aware now, in a way that she wasn't even a month ago, that she's missing things when she naps during the day, so it's harder for her to unwind. She usually unwinds the swaddle minutes after being put down asleep, so it's really just for the nursing to sleep phase. Hang in there!

I was never good at a sling either. Luckily my grandma picked us up a baby bjorn type carrier at a yardsale for $1. I loved that until DS grew out of it (he's now 23 lbs) and I use an ergo. I haven't mastered putting DS on my back in the ergo yet, but I bet that will make it easy to get things done around the house!

Currently I do just get things done while he naps, because he is heavy and it hurts my back and shoulders to wear him too long, but here is what we do for naps--

Rock/nurse until asleep. Transfer to family bed. Usually this re-awakens him, so I side-lie nurse or just lay with him till he is back asleep (usually a matter of seconds). Once he's definitely asleep, I slip away. I put pillows on either side of him so that he is snuggled in. Turn on moniter, and turn on bathroom fan for white noise.

He usually wakes up after about 45 minutes, but still wants to sleep, so I can just lay down and nurse him back to sleep in about 2-5 minutes. He does this 3 times and usually takes a total of a 3 hour nap.

Your DS may not be as light of a sleeper as mine, but mine def is, and I have had great luck with the white noise and the pillows around him.

Good luck Mama!

ETA: you could take him for a walk in a carrier or stroller for a workout too. Try to find ways to incorporate him into the workout.. its the only way i get any excersize anyways...

Do you have a carrier that would do a back carry? DS is 20 pounds, I can't wear him in the moby and see under me
so I had a friend make an ergo-like carrier for me.

He hates being swaddled now, he loves to kick his little feet. He loved it when he was first born though. But he will nurse to sleep, maybe that's just what I need to do. We only have pouch slings, which, like you said, make it hard. Maybe next paycheck we'll try a different sling. Thanks.
