I was reading "Homeschooling for Excellence" last night, and was interested by their recommendation of the "Programmed Reading" curriculum. Since I haven't seen it discussed previously, I was wondering if anyone has any thoughts about it.

It seems like an interesting concept, but pretty expensive ($15 per workbook, of which there are 27). My daughter would probably like it, though I'm honestly not sure we need a reading curriculum at all.

Any insights, pointers to reviews, comparisons with other programs, etc. would be appreciated!

To follow up, I found a free on-line adaptation of the first book of this series, for those who may be interested in finding out what it's all about:

http://www.learntoreadfree.com/

My daughter plans to try it out this afternoon. I looked at the first lesson, and while it's below her current reading level, I think the free online lessons should get to a point where she actually could use some practice.

My daughter did a couple of lessons and got bored -- it's pretty repetitive, and since the lesson was pure review for her, it wasn't that interesting. I think she would have been more engaged if I'd previewed it and found the exact lesson that would have challenged her with things she doesn't already know cold.

I think the method itself looks good, and I might consider it in the future if it seemed like we needed it and I could figure out the right level for her.
