I have some free mag subscriptions and I would like to get a parenting one. Does anyone know much about Child, Parents, or Parenting? I am looking for a progressive, AP focused one. Does anyone subscribe to any of these? Are they ok or should I just not even bother? Any input would be wonderful.Thank you so much

I read these at the gym while I work out because they are keep my attention more than fishing or IT world magazines

Parenting I believe has a column by Dr Sears, Parents is not very AP and is full of adds for gross looking snack foods and the like, but I have found some interesting articles in it, as well as articles that make me want to scream. I don't recall Child magazine, but I would assume it is mostly the same. None of the 3 are what you would call AP at all, but like I said, I do enjoy some of the articles. I use them like I use any other parenting resource...I take what I like and ditch the rest.

I agree with the last post, and would like to add that while Child occasionally runs interesting articles, they mostly seem to run adds for very expensive childrens clothing & toys, and a lot of their articles seem to deal with teaching kids to be less selfish than their parents are (hmmm, could there possibly be a connection? : ). But that's just my opinion!

I have a free subscription to Parenting. I wouldn't call it AP, per se, but it's the most AP magazine I know of, besides Mothering.

Ones I like:

Brain, Child http://www.brainchildmag.com
Nurturing (haven't got it yet but it looks good) http://www.nurturing.ca/

I had a trial subscription to Child and Parents and promptly cancelled them when I got the bill. It was more formula ads, CIO, articles that were really ads for stuff, reasons my baby would be fine in daycare, etc... than I could handle.

I find that when I look at the covers of these magazines they make me feel like I am not "doing it right" that something in the way that I am or i am doing things needs to be changed It isn't just because I AP. That is the design and marketing of mainstream magazine. It the beauty secret headlines on the fashion mags but with a parenting spin. And just like when I flip through a fashion magazine I feel worse about myself, I find the same is true of mainstream parenting magazines too. Look at the headlines. Don't ask if the topic interests you, but does the headline imply that you need to change? If it does, don't get it. You'll just feel crummy after a dose of it.

PS - I also like brainchild.

I'm a little confused. Are you only interested in free magazine subscriptions? You are aware that this mothering.com discussion board is based on Mothering Magazine, right? Mothering is the only AP parenting magazine I know of. (Except Compleat Mother, which seemed a little less professional to me.)

https://www.mothering.com/subscribe.html

Someone bought me CHILD.
It is so awful. Hip baby clothes for HUNDREDS of dollars. How to have these birthday parties for even little babies that are so laughable you could cry.
It is not AP or progressive. Formula adds everywhere. Beauty tips. Make-up adds, diapers. Blaqqqqq!!!!

IIRC, it is "Child" magazine I somehow got some sort of free subscription to somehow. I thumbed through it this past month and it had such a "wonderful" article on ages to do things to make everything easier in the long run.

By 5 months, according to it, the parents should go on trip ALONE for a weekend (or week, can't remember which it recommended) because you "need the time alone" by then and it's good to get the kid used to being dumped places early so the parents can go on vacation. Early dumping leads to less crying when the kid is a toddler and you go away on vacation, you know. :

Same magazine, same issue, possibly same article also said CIO was good.

I'm guessing she got one of those offers that only covers mainstream magazines. It's hard to pass up a free subscription. Personally, hard or not, I would pass it up. Those magazines are crap and are mainly ads for various corporations--diaper, formula, junk food--and the JPMA.

Skip 'em all.

I went to the Nurturing Website, and I am really offended by what I read in the "tumbling down" article.

A sample:

"Today there are an increasing number of single adults living together outside of marriage. Homosexuals are also pushing hard to see same-sex marriage legalized. Both groups want to be considered a family unit. But God intended families to be made up of one man and one woman joined in marriage, with children through birth or adoption. God’s plan will not change regardless of what society changes."

So, that about turns this magazine OFF for me. I'm not a "family" in God's eyes?????????

totally T

:LOL I always have to laugh when I read those things, because there's nothing remotely "biblical" about the families they describe. I mean, when Avram and Sarai got married they didn't have a big ceremony and call all their friends. It just said "Avram took Sarai into his tent." (At least, that's what it says in Hebrew..) And then he goes and marries another woman too! :LOL

I suppose that's a post for a whole different thread, huh?
