Provera to induce AF?

494 Views 8 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  ~adorkable~
I'm on CD90 and just got my blood HCG back (BFN) so I have been given Provera to induce AF.
I'm wondering if anyone has taken this, what were your expreriences?

Did it work? Make period heavier/worse? Mood swings? Etc...

I've had the pills since yesterday but still can't decide if I want to take them....

Any alternatives (herbal) that worked for you?

I have done this twice and both times it worked well and was pretty easy, af was normal, maybe a bit darker grainer from being so long in the making, but nothing big.

There can be a big variance of how long after the last pill it works, they say from just a few days to 2 weeks and sadly it can vary that much. If you look at my charts (homepage link) you can see the first two long cycle at the very bottom of the page. You can see where I took provera (the P marked in the med boxes) and then how long it took to work as well.

I saw go for it, it's basicly just mimicing the last part of your cycle that you arnt having since you dId not O.

Oh and yes I read about most all natural way to bring on af and did most of them for many times and nothing worked for me. Not to say they never work, just my experiance.

Good luck! I may be waded down this same road again right now as well my chart is looking that way and that sucks.
Oh and remember that your temp will raise just like you ovulated. It will be false of course, just the natural reaction to the progesterone. I think ff will mention that the progesterone may be causeing errors, or you can simply override it so you don't have false crosshairs taunting you and throwing off your stats.
Forgive me for asking, but what will inducing a period do to help? Will it help you ovulate (I'm not being snarky--I'm sincerely curious)? I am sitting on CD100 today. I saw my gyn on CD 70 or 75, and he did not mention this option. I'm wondering if it might be helpful for me. Thanks!

I took it once and it was fine. I noticed no side effects. I took it for 5 days and AF started 5 days after I stopped.

In 5 months, you can bet I tried EVERYTHING to induce O OR AF, but nothing worked. Next time I get a cycle like that (and I'm sure I will), I will just go straight to the Provera.

When I had a cycle that went on for 5 months, with no O in sight, I did go get it. It ended that cycle, and I did ovulate the next cycle. It did not happen until CD 28 (which is NOT abnormal for me), but it did happen and I was nearly dancing for joy. It's kind of a tossup. If it's because of something like PCOS, where there is an ongoing underlying cause for the lack of O, then I don't think it will really help. However, if you just kind of got stuck mid-cycle and it's a fluke, than I think it can press the "reset" button and help.

Thanks for all the info! and for the above
...I probably would have thought I'd O'd

Deb- The way I understand it is that the Provera is supposed to make your body think you've O'd, thus inducing AF so you can start on a brand new cycle. (someone correct me if I'm wrong)

I think I'm just scared to take the Provera because online I found people complaining of horrible mood swings, cramping, heavy, heavy periods, etc.. Just wanted to get some experiences from you ladies here

I took it way back in high school. It did work, but it also did make a crying, hormonal, crazy woman for about a week before it kicked in. Years later I did acupuncture which helped me get back on track.
I took it after a 96 day cycle. I had gone off of birth control and never o'd. It did help jump start my cycle and I started o'ing pretty regularly after that.

I didn't have any mood swings or horomonal issues from taking it. I wish I had taken it sooner. None of the natural methods worked for me.
Te reason that folks take Provera in this case is since AF is he very start of your cycle, getting you to that often is just what you need to start.

From what i understand this is going to work best when your issue is either just a random anovulatory cycle in a otherwise pretty regular system, or to jump stat after BCP or other things that leave you in the lurch when you end them and therefor dont have the start of a normal cycle, so dont O so never end the cycle.
the idea is to break in at the point in the cycle that is it easiest for us to fake and then let your body take it from there.

now if you are regularly anovulatory either from some unbalance or simply pp, you will probably want and need to address the big picture in your body. the best thing in the end might very well be a combo of both.

i clearly do not remember getting any big classic hormonal side effects, and my dh agrees that i "seemed fine" We were even going through a really hard time with army deployments, so if i was going to go crazy i certainly would have.
