My youngest, who will be 4 in 2 weeks, has been having a hard time. She started complaining about stomachaches awhile back, and at first the pattern/frequency was such that we really didn't think much about it. Over time, she began to complain more, and more often. At the same time she was developing more and more anxiety about going to preschool. She also began to become harder and harder to live with at home, she was moody and having lots more tantrums over minor things. We had chalked this all up to the anxiety about preschool, thinking she wasn't ready. We were going to finish up this semester then probably pull her out, not send her back in January, and try again in the fall. In the meantime, we decided it would be prudent to bring her to the doctor to have her stomachaches evaluated even though we thought they were the result of anxiety (because it's so common for kids' stomachaches to be the result of anxiety rather than a medical problem).

Turns out she has reflux. Within days of starting treatment for the reflux she was a different kid, back to her old self. Fewer tantrums, no complaints about stomachaches. She hasn't been anxious about school or refusing to go. She's been having fun at school, talking to the teachers more, exploring the school more. She's a happier, more comfortable, more relaxed kid. Once the pain began to dissipate, so did her tension and anxiety and moodiness.

It's just good to keep in mind that ruling out potential medical/physical/nutritional factors when it comes to ongoing behavioral or emotional difficulties is so important.

have you looked into food sensitivities? sorry if you've mentioned this in another thread already!

reflux and food sensitivities can definitely be linked...

and of course food sensitivities can cause behavior issues, even without reflux being in the picture.
