What are the pros and cons of them? I have a bunch of wool that I can use as backing, and I don't have any PUL. But I was thinking that if I used wool I wouldn't be able to machine wash the pads or the wool might shrink, and plus the pads would be thicker.

I just made some with some felted wool jersey. It really depends on what type of wool you have. I super felted two big pieces of wool and one was very thick and bulky and the other was much trimmer. You can super felt the wool buy washing it and drying it in hot a few times, then it should be washable. I wouldn't use all your wool though just test a piece to see how it felts.

Now, I am just starting on cloth on my next cycle so, I am not sure abour performance, but I will report back!
