My 8mo DS loves to pull hair. He thinks its so funny.

It hurts a lot, of course, and in some circumstances it is kind of dangerous. He grabs my hair and squeals in delight as I carry him down the stairs. Heaven forbid he gets entangled with our long-haired chihuahua.

I can fairly easily distract him w/ a toy. So that's good. Nevertheless, I'd greatly appreciate hints on how to discourage this behavior all together. Any ideas as to when he will grow out of this?

:

I got a haircut

Seriously, I cut my hair that was halfway down my back into a bob with chunky funky layers and I LOVE it, DD doesn't have much hair to pull now and it's great. I know that's probably not what you want to hear but it worked for me

My eight month old does the same. The only thing that helps me is pulling my hair back into a pony tail., and even then he will occasionaly get it, but not quite so often, also I've learned if I stay calm instead of yelling out he looses intrest, if not its all just a fun game for him. I hope that helps a little.

i'm trying to get ds2 to stop messing with my hair because it's already ds1's lovey and I HATE IT. sorry for shouting but i can't bear to have my hair touched anymore but i need to for ds1 for a bit longer (i've started telling him that mummy doesn't like that), i imagine but another two years of it is creeping me out.

i try to put a cuddly toy in ds2's hand rather than my hair. sometimes he gets worked about it but mostly it's good. must try harder...

I usually catch Micah before he gets a good hold on my hair and pry his fingers out, but sometimes he will catch me off guard and if I didn't known better, I would think a grown man was yanking on it -- Its that hard!! :

MY DH should would appreciate tips about how to keep our 3 mo from grabbing his chest hair...he even pulled some out the other day. :

Unfortunately (?), he's pretty hairy and even when dressed some chest hair is exposed.

I wish it didn't hurt so much cause ds just loves to do it! He'd love it if I just let him go for it.

My 7-month-old does the same thing. He pulls my hair and giggles like it's the funniest thing. This is endless entertainment for him, too. He could do it all day....grab, pull, giggle...grab, pull, giggle...endless cycle.

I'm hoping he'll grow out of it soon.

I am wearing a beret today & this has helped.

Saying, "No, no" seems silly and I don't want to be negative all the time. Removing the temptation & distraction have worked the best so far.

I just wonder when he will lose interest. It has been an issue for as long as he could grab & I really don't remember my DD being that into hair pulling. It's kinda funny. It certainly is an effective attention getting tool.

I love the camaraderie! Thanks!

My son has loved my hair ever since he was a real baby -- maybe 2-3 months? I usually cover my hair, but he would crow in delight as soon as I uncovered it. As soon as he was able, when I'd bend over him to change his diaper or some such, he'd grab my hair and start mouthing it -- a couple of times I stayed that way to see what happened, and he moved all over my head sticking new chunks of hair in his mouth till my entire head was wet. Eww!

I read on a different post a while back that this grabbing hair thing is a natural instinct, baby animals (monkeys and others probably) grab their mama's hair when the go for rides so they don't fall off...IDK but that made me feel better about it, and it was really getting to me (I told everyone that the only stress I have as a parent is the hair pulling!). If she's just doing what the monkeys do, who am I to tell her no! so I just wear it up or untangle her fingers DD is 9 mos and it happens considerably less than it used to though, maybe it's ending
