From the article:

"the Democratic governor couldn't afford much of anything during a trip to a Salem-area grocery store on Tuesday, where he had exactly $21 to buy a week's worth of food — the same amount that the state's average food stamp recipient spends weekly on groceries."

Just a drop in the bucket, really. But a drop in the right direction, IMO.

I think it's important that government officials experience what life is like for those who are not financially so fortunate. Before deciding how much minimum wage or food stamps should total, it makes sense to see if someone can live on that.

Recently DH saw an article in which a previous government official was asked "how much does bread cost?". He gave the price of bread 5 years ago (much cheaper then!).

It would be great if they (state and local officials) had to live on the food stamp budget for an entire month before any legislation got passed....

I think that all politicians ought to be paid minimum wage (or something close to it), and have to pay for their own health insurance, and not be able to vote themselves pay raises, and not get whatever other perks they get. They'd only get them if we the people allowed it.

I think about this all the time and wonder how different things would be then.

Fabulous link, thanks.

I'm on food stamps too, although I spend more than $21 a week on food..... *however* I also have two kids, and usually run out of food stamps by the end of the month.

BUT ~~ I also did spend roughly $30 last week for a well-planned bit of weekly edible goodness, and in fact, using the Fabulous Hillbilly Housewife plan, was actually able to feed all of us for that $30 for more than a week!

So it can be done. It just takes more planning (and staying up much later than usual to prepare the food the night before ).

Here's the menu and shopping list I was using, slightly modified for 3 people instead of 4 to 6 ~~

http://hillbillyhousewife.com/40dollarmenu.htm

It's not all wholesome, healthy food by these forums standards, but it is relatively nutritious and filling, and amazingly, my kids actually eat it! And when you only have $30 or $40 (or in the Governor's case, $21) to spend for a weeks worth of food, it can't all be organic whole foods.

She also has some great information on her site about other home-made goods (like this!), as well as homeschooling and such. Very cool woman, and awfully sweet too (I've e-mailed her a few times in the past ).

I think it's $21 per person, so a family of 3 would be spending $63 a week.

My step dad just did a calculator to see if him and my mom qualified. It said they "may" qualify for $250 a month. He plans on looking into this further as they are always broke and he think the "government riped them off" so if they qualify why not.

(They actually were ripped off by some stupid law Regan passed. Federal employees had to pay INTO Social Security but they could not collect it once they retired because they got Federal Retirement. Which they also paid into. : I can't grasp the logic behind that one.)
