Well I just got an awesome deal on a huge lot of prefolds... Like, more than 50 of 'em. I think they are all Gerber brand. I am planning on using them for various purposes (as lay in soakers, burp rag, and will try as dipes).

But I am wondering if Gerber quality is pretty poor compared with other PFs? How much does that matter in a PF?

Gerber are pretty thin (unless they are the DSQ gerber) but they work great for me doubled up! I actually made contours w/ elastic and microfleece out of these. I used the microfleece on top, prefold on bottom, with trifolded prefold sewn in the wet zone. They work awesome and have great absorbancy. Also, if I don't want the staydry of the microfleece, I just flip them over. Not sure how good they would work alone - but with 50 you could definetely make some contours or prefitteds, or just double 'em up!!!!

ARe you talkin about the gerber in the store? I have a whole drawer full of flannel, white and print. I used them as burp clothes for ds. So I could possibly use the flannel and print as doublers if we have a girl? I will want to use the plain white as burp clothes and buy some girl prints. I have not begun my CD journey but will as soon as baby is here in a couple of weeks.

I bought some gerber ones thinking they would work. They were awful. They weren't very absorbent and therefore always leaked. They are now rags.

The big difference between Gerber-like prefolds & what you can get online is thickness - which makes the biggest difference at nighttime. I have some Gerber prefolds & they are fine during the day, I will often use a doubler of some kind for a little extra something in there.

I use my much thicker prefolds for night. Gerber prefolds would never be able to handle night-wetting, and would leave a really wet unpleasant diaper by the morning. It's worth buying at least a dozen prefolds online if you can to throw into the mix.

i have about 50 or 60 gerber prefolds...the birds eye as well as the DSQ...IMO, they ALL suck. I have thirsties UBCPF and they are OK, but the baby's textiles are FABULOUS!!!
they are SO thick and absorbant! Maybe you could use them as a doubler, or something similar...but as a dipe alone...naahhhhh. Oh, if they have the POLY pads inside...look out..they will smell!
