Okay, I'm a lefty and was raised by 2 righty parents..

I do a lot of things ambidextrous (sp?).. Anyway, my 2 yr old is very fascianated w/ cutting his own food.

He seems to be right hand dominant.. For me when I cut food, I place my knife in my right hand. And I can continue to eat, as my left dominant hand is holding my fork. My dh who is righty uses his knife also in his right, but when he needs to take a bite w/ his fork, he has to drop his knife and pick up his fork... Seems like a lot of work to me

So humor me, I have nothing else to worry about right now, should I teach my ds to hold his knife in his left hand? (But then on the other hand, dh and I hold our knives in our right so we couldn't even figure out how to cut w/ our left hands
)

What do you righty's do?

The "American" way is to cut with the right and then put the fork in the right to eat with.

The "European" way is to keep the fork in the left and knife in the right and not set down the knife with every bite.

I used to do what your husband does, until I met my husband, who is a lefty, and does what you do. His whole family eats this way as well, even though they're not all left-handed. now I've switched, mostly to fit in with his family since we spend a lot more time with them.

I don't know why his family does it this way, other than they travel extensively, oh and they also are more recent immigrants from Europe (his mom is only 2nd generation I think).

I am also a righty married to a lefty. My DH eats like you do, and I eat the awkward American way
I've tried to teach myself to eat "continental" but I am so right handed (and impatient, I guess!) that I usually give up. I hadn't really thought about it yet, but I think we'll try to teach dd to eat continental, she looks like she may be a lefty anyways. Interesting question, though!
