Hi,

On reading the reviews about Hazelwood and Amber on the sites that sell both these necklaces - it seems like Hazelwood is the better "cure" for Teething, Eczema and Colic type of symptoms in babies rather than Amber.

For all that - seems like - Amber is the more sought after necklace type. Can someone explain why please? We have many threads here testifying to the benefits of amber teething necklaces but not as many for Hazelwood.

Am curious because am trying to order me one. TIA

The only reason I can think of is that amber is connected to a Northern European tradition while Hazelwood seems to be connected to an Aboriginal Canadian tradition--given that, there are simply fewer mamas who know about it.
For me I have grandmothers/great grandmothers for whom amber was a part of their baby care, so it was just a given.

Also I have only JUST recently begun to see Hazelwood teething necklaces for sale (and my oldest is almost 10y so I've been around all this for a while), so while they may be more effective the word just isn't out yet.

Must be a cultural or regional availability thing - I have never seen amber necklaces for babies around here (Quebec/Ontario, Canada) but my friends and I all swear by "Bois d'orignal" (French) necklaces - the literal translation is moose wood but I'm pretty sure it's Hazelwood in English. You can buy them in most health food stores, aboriginal craft stores, and high end baby boutiques. I had never heard of amber for teething until reading about it on MDC.

Interesting. When I research hazelwood the suggestion is that topical application of hazelwood reduces acidity in the body, leading to better health. When I research amber the suggestion is that it's the succinic acid and mild electric charge that relieves discomfort. There are certainly testimonials to both (and I've used both myself and in my family) and relatively little research done on either.

In terms of popularity I'm sure it's a regional/cultural thing. Amber is found in European pharmacies, hazelwood in Canadian pharmacies. Since many of the "natural health"/"natural toy"/"natural baby care" catalogs (and waldorf supply catalogs) feature European products it's not surprising that amber has more "press" in the US at the moment. In my own experience I found the amber more effective, but I think this is the sort of topic on which everyone's milage will vary! A necklace combining the two would be very pretty, even if it did nothing to relieve discomfort.

I trust amber more. My dad is into stones and their properties and said that amber was very effective. It has been! I love it.

Interesting... I live in Ontario Canada and I have never heard of hazelwood necklaces, or seen them for sale anywhere. I have heard of amber and know other moms who have heard of it and bought necklaces for their babes, and seen them for sale.

We actually have an amber one, and an amber/hazelwood combo as well. The hazelwood combo was recommended to me for reflux issues.

My DD is 11 months old and just 4 weeks ago broke her 1st tooth through. No issues at all! No apparent pain or anything - I was *SO* impressed! She's been wearing her solid amber necklace for about 5 months, I take it off to clean it, back on it goes.

We used our amber/hazlewood combo more when DD was younger and dealt with reflux a good bit - it seemed to help as well!! I got our from Inspired By Finn

What part of Ontario?...maybe it's more of a north/eastern thing? I'm in Chelsea (near Gatineau/Ottawa). I got my bois d'orignal (same as Hazelwood I'm pretty sure) necklace at Khewa in Wakefield. It was made in Cantley, Quebec. I've seen them in lots of other stores too, even a mainstream pharmacy near my downtown office carries them.

I'm convinced that it works, as are many of my friends. I had only heard of using it for teething but will keep it in mind if we have any other ailments. Thankfully we seem to be through the reflux and eczema days.

We are dealing with major teething, minor reflux (leftover from her first 2 months of GERD issues) and some moderate eczema.

Ordered an Amber necklace and am now second guessing myself that maybe I should have ordered a combo necklace

Is there any difference in the color of amber in the necklace? One website suggests lighter color amber is more effective, possibly. Anyone found this to be true? What color are your necklaces?
