My parents are completing their chapter 13 bankruptcy, which I think they started three years ago. Everything has to be settled by the end of this month, and my mom is really stressing. Partially due to the bk, and partially due to the economy, she has lost the entirety of her retirement savings, and I think my dad has too. They will be 60 in a few months. :

What I want to know is, are they almost certainly going to lose their house? Mom WILL NOT talk with me about specifics of the bk, she's embarrassed about it and stressed and "doesn't want you guys to worry" since we have a newborn right now. I'm worried about her though. Knowing her, I wouldn't know they lost the house until they had been evicted and then she would just call me to let me know not to try mailing anything to their old address.

Does anyone know more about chapter 13s? I've read about the legal stuff but it all gets muddled, I guess I am interested in hearing specifics of how it plays out for families.

What state? In Texas you keep the house and I think up to a certain value in personal propery (but you'd still have to pay the mortgage).

In most bks-13 and 7, you keep your house, personal property and 1 car per person. 13 is repaying debt, 7 is discharging the debt.
