Question about Goldenseal for GBS

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I got some info that taking goldenseal root 2 500 mg capsules by mouth daily will help you gety a negative GBS test. Question is there was a warning saying that goldenseal could cause early labor. Is that true? Would the listed dosage cause labor or would you have to take more than reccomended? What does it do that causes labor? Thanks!

I think it's because of the possible effect on the uterus and because the alkaloids in it are unsafe. I'd ask your midwife before taking it.

My midwife recommended putting a bulb syringe very gently into the vagina and squirting the mild hydrogen peroxide solution you can buy up there (I think it's 3%?). The protocol (I think, it's hard to remember exactly) was 3x per week, then 2x a week, this starts 2 weeks before you test.

She had a printout from some article about it. I'm going to have to call her up to try to get a copy of it again for my next pregnancy (I'm moving, so she can't be my midwife again )

I also was told by my midwives that goldenseal is a no-no during pg and breastfeeding. Echinacea, yes, goldenseal, no.

As for the GBS...taking probiotics in capsule form (1-2 caps. 3x a day, on a semi-empty stomach) and getting some natural good bacteria in the form of yogurt or whatever, increasing garlic (fresh, real, organic if poss) intake helps, anything to help boost your immune system will help. And be re-tested every week if you test positive. I tested positive at 37 weeks, and had it redone at 40 weeks, and tested negative. GBS is cyclical, it can go away.

You can do a hibiclens douche (similar to what pp mentioned) during labor to avoid antibiotics...it's dilluted to something like 1:10 hibi to boiled (cooled) water...every 3 hours during labor after your water breaks until you deliver.
