I haven't gone to the dentist since January 2004 (don't get on me, I've been pregnant or nursing since May 2004, and been too scared to go to the dentist because after dd was born most of the medical professionals I've come in contact with have been really stupid regarding breastfeeding.) I've known I've needed a tooth pulled for awhile now (I can't get my toothbrush back far enough to get my wisdom tooth and it's pretty much falling apart.) I need to go to the dentist now, I can't put it off any longer, but what's safe for them to use while I'm pregnant to pull the tooth? There's nothing in Dr Sears' pregnancy book about this, and it's really embarrassing to ask like this (so please, no judgement!)

I don't know. Local anesthetic? Just think, lots of women take anesthesia while they're pregnant.

I haven't been to the dentist since spring of 2003, and nothing to do with nursing - just chicken!

You should be fine if you are in your 2nd trimester. Let them know you're pg and they should know what you can and can't have. I had a root canal when I was pg with DD and it was fine.

And I was the same way about going to the dentist. But I had to have several teeth pulled last year because I didn't get fillings, etc when I needed them. So don't be chicken!! GO!!!!

I was there yesterday for a cleaning and to have a chipped tooth looked at. He told me to ask my mw if she was ok with me getting it repaired since he would have to do some drilling.
So, maybe ask your mw/obgyn and then give a call?

yes, check with for hcp, and then please get this taken care of. i've had teeth pulled and it's not that bad (but i'm one of those freaks who finds the dentist's chair very relaxing...)
anyway, it's important to take care of your teeth, especially while pregnant it's also a lot easier to get to the dentist while pg than when your toting around a newborn

Now that is really freaky...I find the dentist chair terrifying at best. All those objects of pain and torture...UGH!

Sorry I'm not helping. I have 2 appt. in July and I have had the same questions. I only saw a dentist this year after 5 years...You're not alone, for whatever reasons

I love having my teeth cleaned, and I have had a tooth pulled, but it was a little freaky. The UA violation dentist went from saying I needed a filling (for a wisdom tooth!) to saying it needed to be pulled because after 4 shots of novocaine I was still feeling him drill (because he was drilling my nerve!) Anyway, he grabs this screwdriver looking thing and just starts going to town, no explanation of what's going on, nothing. Then he grabs these pliers, I hear a crack, said, "WTF was that?" No answer, just yank and the tooth was out. He was silent the entire time. Didn't give me any antibiotics or pain meds for after the tooth pulling (which didn't end up being a problem, I never got dry socket) but he just soured me to the whole tooth pulling experience.

I have to wait until June to get this done because of insurance, but that will give me plenty of time to ask the midwife about my options.
