Can anyone recommend a topical lubricant/ pain killer for labor that would be nonnarcotic and safe for baby?

My doc said that all the hospital offers is Lanocain (sp?) but that I could bring something else if I prefer...

There is no drug proven to be safe in pregnancy or labor.

What exactly are you concerned about? I found ice after the birth to be quite soothing as that was when I had discomfort in the perineal area...

I have had two babes and two second degree tears. I haven't found any meds necessary. I did fill the peri bottle with cold water and give myself a few heavenly squirts of that when I was using the bathroom. I was a little swollen and sore but nothing I found I needed meds/creams for. I hope the same for you!

Not sure exactly what you are asking, but during pushing, I had great relief from olive oil and hot/warm compresses to my perineum. I did not have any tears.

I've heard of the olive oil and warm compresses - sounds good.

Has anyone heard about hypericum ointment? I think that it comes from St. John's wort?

Water also feels nice on the perineum; my waterbirth was nice.... Are you talking about for birthing or after?

Yes - hypericum ointment. Good stuff! I prefer olive oil and an infusion of garlic, yarrow, and ginger, used as warm compresses on bottom during pushing.

Also have alternated the warm compresses with very cold compresses and women report that was comforting as well.
