I'm curious if I really need to sew a piece of loop to the tab so the tab can overlap on the XS diapers. Babies in my family are on the small side (DD was 6lb 12oz) I don't like the look of it, so I don't want to do it if I don't have to, but I also don't want to have to sew them to 36 diapers 2 days post-partum either

I'd say DEFINITELY not--ds was 7lb 4 oz and didn't need the overlap for a minute...he was almost to the edges from the start, so I'd say you'll be okay without.

Hmmm... I say maybe. I made a newborn diaper with my own pattern last week and tried it on a newborn that was 7 lbs 10 oz at the time. My diaper was one snap setting away from tightest snaps. The VB AIO XS has wider tabs than mine - like an inch on either side. So I probably would have needed to crossover the VB AIO XS tabs if I'd been putting that on this newborn.

which will be more of a pain...

The fit on babies is so radically different for baby to baby that personally, I'd just sew it on now. If you don't ever need it, great but if you DO need it, it's going to be a royal pain to put it on later and you may not get to use the diapers as much.

Why don't you leave it off one AIO for pictures of the baby and to pat and gaze amd love before you deliver, and put it on the other 35 just in case?

: I was going to suggest putting it on half. That way if you need it you have enough that you don't have to start sewing as soon as you get home from the hospital, but if you don't need it half the stash (the one to show visitors and go out in) looks the way you like best.

one other thought..
I hate to waste touchtape if it won't be used, but wouldn't it be fairly easy to take them off and reuse them on something else if you don't end up needing them? If you zigzag, that stitch is easy to take out, and if you go right over where the hook is on the other side, it probably wouldn't look so bad to take it off.

I don't think my grandma (tallulahbaby.com) ever sews the crossover tab on the XS - a preemie might need one but then the diaper would probably be overall too big for a preemie anyway.
