So I've been off dairy for one week. There have been a couple of slip ups...ate something with butter and ate something with cheese. Also, I had a granola bar that had whey listed as an ingredient. Still no change in my baby. How long will it take?? Did my little slip ups screw it up?? Also, I know about cutting out the obvious dairy like milk, yogurt, butter, cheese, etc., but what about milk listed as an ingredient but far down on the list? How picky do I need to be about it?? All the cream of soups have milk listed and there are lots of things I'm finding that contain milk. Just wondering how strict everyone has been whose cut out dairy with success and also how long it took to notice a difference.

thank you so much for reading and responding. Sincerely, Kelly

It can take up to 6 weeks for milk to get out of the baby's and your system. That being said, we totally totally cut out all dairy. Like, if it had whey or casein - it was out. You really can't slip up if you are cutting out dairy. It's in weird stuff too - like pizza crust and cereal and some deli meats. Is your baby colicky? I would give it a couple more days-week of being really strict about not eating dairy and if you don't see a change, try cutting out soy. A lot of babies that are dairy intolerant are also soy intolerant. Mine ended up being dairy/soy and egg intolerant - she just couldn't process those proteins through my milk. I could eat soybean oil and soy lecithin though - they didn't bother her as the proteins have all been processed out. That being said, it's not as much of a death sentence as it sounds - I can give you a list of mainstream quick foods that are dairy, soy and egg free if you want.

i think it can vary so much. maybe it has to do with the different forms of dairy, like some is called casein, whey, etc. with dd1 she just screamed if i had any dairy. was just miserable. chocolate too, and it would keep her up from the caffeine. but i found i could eat white chocolate, which has milk in it... and yogurt and i remember eating farmer cheese but not sure of her reaction. i just couldn't tolerate no cheese, my body felt like it needed it. then i was slbe to addd it back in when seh was 9 mo or so. Between babies, I have read a lot about milk and thought deeply about what it actually is. It is like if an alien race that was seemingly more intelligent, or craftier, found a way to cage us for their use. When our children are born, they take them away because they want our milk. It is just wrong, IMO. Also there is so much evidence now that dairy is the culprit for so many health problems. Our bodies are just not designed to ingest it for the most part (I know some people can, but they are a minority that can digest it and do not get health problems from it.). I know from my own experience that if I am 70% or more dairy free, I don't get sick when everyone else does with a cold or flu. anyway, yes the cream of soups are one of the worst triggers. No milk, cheese, or anything that has dairy (any form of) listed in the first 5 ingredients at the least. best is to cut it all out till you can see the difference. with dd2 she only screams if i drink milk or am crazy with the milk intake, like eating a dish made with a cream soup. otherwise i can have small amounts of chocolate (like 2 hershey's kisses) once a week or so.... and eat some processed foods with it in the ingredients. for dd2 it is more just a red anal area and red in her crevices where the legs meet body. however, I too would like to rid myself of dairy for good. it is just so ingrained in me and us as a culture....oh and soy is definitely a trigger for dd2. i had some clif bars and man is she red.. and was alittle bit cryee today. she rarely cries so i think it was that. or teething....

yup - you do have to be uber careful!!! it may be frustrating now, but once you surround yourself with items that are milk free it will be come so much easier. For fast food (becuase we all have those days) Taco Bell's Fresco menu is dairy free. I can't tell you how much that has saved my sanity as a WOHM. Oreos are dairy free too
Okay I know that is all junk food, but I just am trying to say that dairy free doesn't mean that you can't have treats, YKIM? I was only doing major dairy and not worrying about hidden, but once I cut out the hidden dairy far down in the ingredients - butter, casein, etc. I noticed a HUGE difference.

Give it a few weeks at least with out any slip-ups.

These are what I've found taht are dairy/soy/egg free -
Tyson's Buffalo chicken and Spicy chicken
Subway - all their breads except the ones with cheese on top are fine - just don't add cheese and mayo has eggs
Papa Murphy's crust - no cheese on the pizza tho :-(
Rice bowls with Yumm sauce - I put rice, kidney beans, tomatoes, avocadoes, salsa, purple onion, cilantro and this sauce - but instead of soybeans, I used kidney beans - also canned chick peas freeze just fine if you have to

SaraLee 100% whole wheat bread

Definitely be careful of processed meats as they add soy protein to them quite a bit.

Rice Dream milk really tastes pretty decent - I actually like it better than milk now. (and that is saying something - my husband's family runs a dairy!)

Cheese is a hard one - I never found any cheese that was dairy AND soy free - it was usually one or the other.

You can do spaghetti and believe it or not, the Pillsbury crescent rolls in the can are so processed there is no dairy/soy/egg in them. They aren't the healthiest, but hey - everyone needs some fake food lol. I also did sourdough (which usually has no dairy/soy/egg) with olive oil, garlic salt and oregano - yummy! You can also get some great dipping oils.

They have ice cream called Coconut Bliss that is SO SO good - my husband's family makes and distributes it for Larry and Luna (who made the recipe) and you can get it a lot of places - it really tastes pretty great. I think they have chocolate too, so you can get your choc fix in!

I'll try to think of some more - I pretty much lived on that diet - I found I needed to eat a TON more protein when I was dairy/soy/egg free ebcause I wasn't getting it from the dairy. Also, you may want to take a calcium pill.

I found and made a dairy free ice cream today that totally rocks! I added some peppermint oil to it so I have chocolate mint "ice cream" If you don't have an ice cream maker follow the link the author posts about making it without one and it worked great. I am going to start playing with it to get different flavors
