We've just started our own farm with dairy goats, ducks and chickens and I feel a little nervous with our ds 4 whose never been vaccinated running around rambunctiously. Do you worry about Tetanus at all? If so, how do you deal with it or have you decided to vaccinate?

TIA,

Julie

I would think that the treatment AFTER a serious (non bleeding... etc) puncture wound would be much more effective than the vax. Especially since there is no evidence the vax works at all.

ETA: Oops... sorry, thought this was in the vax forum.

What exactly does this shot do? Is that the immunoglobin?

I'm sorry, but when you have a farm, and you have animals, I don't care how anti-vax you are, you vaccinate for tetanus - both yourself, your children and your animals. I've lost a total of four lambs over the years to tetanus because I didn't vaccinate for a while. No amount of cleaning of the wound is enough sometimes. It's a horrible death. Don't risk your kid, okay?

I talked with my homeopath about the tetanus vaccine and that was the only one she would recommend. Her answer had to do with the way the virus enters the body being consistent with the way the vaccine enters the body.

I've read that it's sometimes more effective to receive the vaccine at the time of the wound than to receive routine 10 year boosters, but I honestly haven't studied the issue in-depth.

Since my last tetanus booster nearly knocked me on the floor within a second of receiving the shot, you know I ain't up to date.

My kids are vaccine free.

I do know that Vitamin C will neutralize the bacterial toxins of tetanus. There is a lot of information on Tetanus in the vaccine forum - you may want to read up there for a spell -- check out the stickies!

We're not vaccinating. We know what the risks are on all sides and that's our decision.

When we hurt ourselves, we keep it clean and watch for signs of infection. None of us wear are covered in thick lambs wool, so that makes it a lot easier.

Our pedi fully supported our decision not to vax but nearly begged me to give Tetnus!

He said tetnus can live an number of decades in the soil, in the right environment. It's the only vax my kids have.

we do selective/delay vax but if we lived in an environment where exposure was a less than remote possibility I'd probably do just tetanus even if we did no others.

If you decide to go w/ just tetanus, make sure they don't give your DC the DTaP or DT "by mistake".
