I'm taking 160 mg domperidone and still using formula supplements. I think my daughter is taking less formula now. Back when I would pump and feed her what i pumped and then give formula she would consistently take 4 ounces/feeding. Now she usually takes 1-3 ounces/feed after nursing...usually 1-2. So I am assuming I have more milk? Sometimes I wonder if she is just annoyed with the bottle and not necessarily full. But when I pump (which I don't do often anymore and when I do it is right before bed) I still only get about an ounce or a little more which is about what I got before the dom. Only difference is it all comes out within like 3 minutes now. So do I really have more milk if I'm not able to pump more? Did you guys experience an increase in what you were able to pump? I did a weigh before and after feeding a couple weeks ago and she got 1.7 ounces from me. That was before I upped from 120 to 160 mg. Thanks.

Hi Cindy,

I'm also taking Dom and here is how I figured out that it was actually working:

1) Baby didn't want any formula supplements during the day after a feeding.

2) I would wake before she woke in the middle of the night and pump one very full breast (saving the other for babe) and noticed that one breast produced significantly more milk than pre-Dom. I went from 1-ish/1.25 oz to about 3 oz from one breast. I can't get that amount when I pump during the day because she's constantly feeding so it's hard to tell.

3) I have milk in the fridge now. Like you, I pump before I go to sleep but I also do the middle of the night pump and this has really pretty much solved the supply problem. I also pump during the day if she doesn't seem to have emptied my breast.

Hope that helps. I know what a pain the supply stuff can be.

I rented a medela scale so I could track how much my DD was getting. Even if I didn't have the scale I could tell domperidone was working. My breast get very full when its feeding time and if she slept through a feeding I was able to pump out 5 to 6 oz instead of my normal 1/2 oz. Domperidone started working within 24 hours for me but I've heard it can take a few weeks for some women. Good luck and if your concerned about how much she is getting try renting a scale for a week.

For me, I didn't see much difference in pumping, but then my boobs are pump failures!
How I could tell that it was helping was noticing more fullness, hearing DD gulp and swallow more energetically, and her being satisfied after only 1oz supplement per feed.
The ultimate tell-tale sign will be her weight. So long as she's gaining between a half ounce to an ounce daily, she's on track. If she's gaining 2 ounces or more a day, you can probably cut back the supplement. That's what happened with us. She was gaining an ounce a day with the 1oz supplement, and then when I upped my dom, she gained two ounces a day, so the ped said I could scale back the supplement a bit.
Hope that helps!
Boobs are so frustrating!

Hang in there, mama

Ignore pumping output if you're one of those women - like me - who just can't produce for the pump. You could very well be making more milk even if you're not pumping more.
The only way to really know how much she's getting is to rent a scale as a PP suggested and do pre and post-feed weights. I'd suggest monitoring her weight really closely instead so you don't get even more stressed out - the last thing you need.
For the dom to work the best, you need to empty your breasts really well. Have you considered ditching the bottles and supplementing at the breast with a Medela SNS or Lact-Aid? Your baby will do a better job than any pump!

Well DD slept through the night so I got up at 5:30 and pumped (she slept until 6!!). Granted, it had been 8 hours since I nursed her but I pumped almost 4 ounces (almost all from the left side)!! I did a happy dance for sure! I knew that wasn't my normal output bc it had been so long though. I pumped again just now after not nursing for 4 .5 hours (I had a long hair appt and dh and baby were still out when I got home). This time I got 2 ounces in 10 minutes. This is still a huge improvement over my 1 ounce. Hopefully DD gets more than that when she nurses. I don't want to rent a scale again...I had one in the beginning. I might go to this store that lets you use theirs though and do a feed. I did one there a couple weeks ago but upped the dose since then.

I tried the SNS and couldn't get it right. I really didn''t like it. I might be up for trying a lactaid though since I hear people like them more. Right now I am nursing DD at every feed then giving her a bottle (one that doesn't mess up her latch). She practically won't nurse on my right breast (the one that makes little milk) and usually won't nurse vigorously for more than 10 minutes on my left...but it seems to take less time than that for the pump to get most of the milk out so hopefully she has gotten most of the milk then starts to lose interest? If so, that is fine.

I consider the dom to be a success if I have doubled my output which it looks like I have. :)
