Well, we chose a naturopath, so we knew that she'd be "in tune" with our philosophy. We knew she supports no-vax and delayed/selective vax, we knew she wouldnt be super pumped to give the baby antibiotics for ear infections, etc....

so, we talked about our own medical history-- DH has asthma, we both have alergies-- and she gave me some suggestions (no dairy or citrus for the first week after baby is born)... and re-assurances-- she will be looking for signs of asthma developing as the child ages....

That was most helpful for us-- to have discussed "concerns" for possible health issues for baby.

What are your opinions on:

Vaccinations and the "recommended" schedule (incl Hep B, typically recommended at birth)
Eye ointment prophylaxis (birth)
Vit K shot (birth)
The use of antibiotics in general
Colic, its causes and treatments
Alternative medicines like herbs, supplements, diet, etc.
Breastfeeding (how long, etc.)
Introducing solid foods (when, etc.)
Do you share the practice with other peds?
What's the on call/after hours policy?
What books do you recommend as good resources for parents?

Honestly, we totally lucked out. Our ped is fairly mainstream but totally open to alternative approaches and she does NOT randomly prescribe abx like some docs do now. Her approach is so long as the parents are making an INFORMED decision, which means she's cool with things like no Hep B vaccination for our baby, because we came in obviously having done our homework/research on it (and the eye ointment, etc.), then she'll be respectful of our wishes.

For instance, we had made up our minds about the eye ointment and Hep B but had concerns and weren't sure about the Vit K shot. So we presented her with info we had on the shot and the Vit K oral and she took the info we gave her, and then afterward did her own research, including talking to the local childhood oncology specialist, and sent us a letter later that week with what she found and how it compared with what we'd read.

She really outdid herself, honestly. We were very impressed. We know there will be times when we may not agree but she was very respectful of our concerns and did not belittle us nor mock our issues, etc. I really like her a lot.

Oh, make sure they give you a full tour of the facility. Ours is a clinic style with three peds total. They have a VERY kid-friendly practice (even have cool things that hang from the ceiling all over, etc.), and they are open on Sat mornings and have a 24-hour on call service.

I can't think of anything else. But that should help get you started.

Good luck!

Great advice thank you. We are in a sort of unique position in that we don't get to choose on not vax'in, but I think we can delay vax. We do get to choose not to circ which was nice. I can ask about they eye ointment but it really won't be up to us until 24 hours after birth.

I'm inducing lactation so I will mention that to the doc and I know there clinic is set up with 4 docs. They have two locations, one for well baby checks and one for sick kids. They also are open on Saturdays from 8:30 to 3:30. The doc I really wanted is gone on materinity leave and will only be coming back 1/2 time so now I'm meeting with another doc.
