My oldest (almost 3) just had the bottle of CLO, greasy hands & greasy lips. He said he took 2 drinks, now he says 3. Is CLO toxic if you get too much? HE didn't take a ton of it, but I'm not sure exactly how much. It is Nordic Naturals.

Thanks!!

It's a natural whole food. It's not toxic.

Even if you buy into the whole "overdose of fat soluble vitamins" premise, the advice is to avoid giving any extra of those vitamins for a while- ie if you took in 3m worth of vitamins at once, dont' give more vitamins for another 3 months.

I googled it to find out what it was and found this about it:

Large doses of vitamin D is toxic with oral intake over prolonged periods, especially for young children. Never administer more than 4,000 IU to 6,000 IU of vitamin D daily for adults and 1,000 - 1,500 IU for children, and for no longer than seven days duration.

The site had a lot to say about safe dosages.
http://users.chariot.net.au/~dna/IQ180/CLO-therapy.htm

teehee, I never thougth to google, I just panicked! Thanks for looking that up. I don't think he got anywhere near that much. Now that I think about it, when they take CLO it is hard for them to take any of it let alone gulp it down so I am sure he just sipped it.

NN is also not a high vitamin brand so I'd guess you were fine. At least they are willing to take it, right?

I'm also not sure if they've ever proven any toxicity from natural sources of vitamin A and D, or if they've only studied the effects of the synthetic versions and applied them to natural food sources as well.

What do you mean by NN is not a high vitamin brand?

IT doesn't have a very high vitamin content. There are CLO's that have high vitamin content so that you take a very small amount, get lots of vitamins and little EFA's and others like NN where you can take larger amounts and get more EFA's but less vitamins. Compare the vitamin A and D content of NN to that of Blue Ice.

If you are looking for vitamins you take Blue Ice or a comparable brand.

If you are looking for EFA's (demyelinization, depression) you take a lower vitamin brand like NN.

Some do both and alternate to get the best of both worlds.

I feel silly asking, but what does EFA mean?

essential fatty acids-don't feel silly!
There are omega 3, 6 and 9. CLO tends to be recognized for it's omega 3 content along with the DHA and EPA.

Thanks! That makes sense.

So how do you feel about other brands or fish oil, like nature made for instance. I ran out of my nn and couldn't afford a new bottle yet, so i picked up some nature made fish oil and i am curious about the quality difference(and how can you tell if ones better than another, besides looking atthe nutrition facts?

research the brand. many companies strip the A & D and add back synthetic replacements. I wouldn't want that. Beyond that you want it to meet purity standards and you want to make sure the company tests for heavy metals. You also want to look for a 10:1 ratio of A to D.

I personally prefer CLO to fish oil for the vitamin aspect.

Decent brands are Carlson's, NN, Blue Ice, Garden of Life, Radiant Life etc. They will all be different so it depends what you are looking for.

for myself i want it for the efa(i have add and i found clo to be a lifesaver for me), but now i see how you could go between the two(blue ice and nn) because I want the vit. for my boys. guess we'll be doing both.
