I wish you all the luck in the world! I was 42 weeks and begged my midwives to let me wait until the full moon-you know barometric pressure.... I took 2 tablespoons of caston oil and the only thing that happened to me was diareah (sp?). I guess the theory was that it is supposed to start stomach cramps that will bring on labor. Good Luck although I did it 3 times and still had to be induced! have you tried accupressure points on your ankles? I have seen that done on people and it really doesn bring on the contractions.

Oh, don't do the vodka. Make a smoothie, and add 2 tbs. Don't get too impatient and do another round... wait at least 8-12 hrs... it may take 4-6 hrs or more for you to see any action.

I was impatient and did 2 rounds of 2 tbs. with ds. I had so much diarrhea that I got *nasty* hemmorhoids and had trouble with my first few bms post-partum (sorry if TMI, but I really don't want you to go where I went!).

Good luck. I feel for you... I remember the impatience, I remember the stress of working against "their" clock. Try as hard as you can to relax. Very soon you'll be holding your baby...

I've used it with clients - but only in root beer.

If it's not too late, have you tried accupuncture? That's how I got my first labour started, I had the first contraction there on the couch.

I had bought the castor oil, but didnt' have to use it.

i've been doing accupuncture for 2 days already, and taking the chinese herbs that go with it. uke

argh! i don't know what to do about the castor oil! it's probably not a good idea, since i have accupuncture at 11am, and the NST at 1:30... don't want to have to go potty in the middle of the treatments/ test.

I had great results with the castor oil. I took 4 tea spoons and it was gross but I took it straight. Within 1 hour I went into labor. Full force. Six hours later my son was born. First baby and I pushed 1 hard time!

i know ppl will hate me for this but if i had a choice btwn being induced again versus castor oil i'd gladly take induction (yuccccccccccccccck!)

even thinking about it 4 months later i feel like throwing up...

that said i think i didnt mix it with enough juice to cover the slimy oily consistency...
hope u have better luck with it...maybe other methods u could try?

Probably not my business but you want to mix it with vodka? I don't know if that would be advisable. It was my impression that no amount of alcohol is safe for in utero babies.

that's debatable, but beside the point.

i read in various places that it's a lot easier to swallow mixed with a little bit of vodka and orange juice. i'm pretty sure a bit of alcohol can't be as bad as pitocin, wouldn't you agree? alcohol does have its medicinal uses, too.

the alcohol helps cut the sliminess of the oil. it also serves to relax the mother, which helps initiate labor. I suppose that 2oz of vodka isn't any worse than a shot of a narcotic in labor. All relative, I guess.

When we did in root beer, I just stir, stir, stir and keep stirring it up until the mom is ready to guzze immediately. She holds her nose and chugs it. Nasty stuff.

I also took it straight up with my third, and had the same basic results as G'mama and KKmama (combined). I do know that I was a least effaced, maybe dilated a bit (I tend to that early). I was not quite to term, but the one doc in town who would let me birth semi-normally was going out-of0town on vacation on my due date!

I'd do it again, and probably will this time.

OH!! dosage. I think I swigged half the bottle, and then about an hour later, the other half. For that, I got the baby and three days of diarrhea. I might take a little less this time :LOL

I also took the whole bottle, my midwife said too. Took it with oj. YUCK! It didnt work, I spent the whole day in the bathroom.
My water had been broken for 3 days when I took the castor oil. After that didnt work we went to the hospital(I was planning a hb) and as soon as I got to the hospital, I started having contractions, after having none for more than 3 days.

I wouldnt do it again, I dont think I can I think one sip of the stuff and Id puke.

well, i didn't take it last night. i'm a wimp.

i'm going in to L&D today for a NST, and if they let me go back home, i might do it today.

one confusing thing... people here are talking about teaspoons and whole bottles! now, the bottle i have is about 6oz, isn't that a bit much? i guess i would start with one ounce, and another a couple of hours later. definitely with OJ, but anot sure about the vodka. i'm getting mixed reviews on that one. some peopl say it's good cause it'll help me relax, some others say it's no good cause it'll help me relax-- and the uterus too.

From much of what I have gathered it seems like a good way to go is 2 doses of 2-3 ounces each four to six hours apart. Mix it in Root Beer, take it with Vodka, however you can get it down. A shot of vodka is not going to hurt the baby and it cuts the oil so it's not so greasy in your mouth.

Castor oil will only work if you are ready to go. Have you tried EPO yet? You can also do a dose of Castor oil and then start alternating blue and black cohosh or Shonda Parker's Start-up. And, there's always sex

One of the midwives in my area recommends putting about 4oz. in a bath and sitting in the bath for an hour or so. She says that she has had good results without the intense intestinal discomfort.

This is related to other methods I have heard for absorption through the skin -- soaking towels in the stuff and applying them to the belly.

I don't know if this method has been tested scientifically, as has the oral delivery route, but there is good anecdotal evidence that it works.

well, i just took it. 2oz and 1/2oz of vodka in a full glass of OJ at 4pm and again at 6pm.

i'm scheduled to be induced tomorrow, so this is my last resort effort. we'll see how it works.
