I've tried at least 10 times to open it yesterday and today, and every time, it crashes my Internet Explorer. I don't what's wrong, because I can open any other post! I just thought I'd tell you, because I noticed you have a lot of views and no replies- maybe it's not just me?

Me too! Argh!

Luckily, I read most of it and have this response:

What she said is not true.

There is no reason to hurry the placenta (and, yes, rushing it can cause hemorrhage and uterine atony!) if the placenta is still attached.

The only problem waiting for the placenta comes with a placenta that is starting to detach but only partially detaches. Then, you have open vessels where the placenta once was, but since part of the placenta is still attached, the uterus cannot clamp down to restrict the blood loss through the open vessels. This is an emergent situation, the most important measure being to get the placenta out as fast as possible!

Other than that, you're right. I've waited as long as 3 hours for a placenta - and I have to admit that I was impatient and went in vaginally, only to find it sitting inside the cervix. I did phone support for an unassisted mom who didn't birth her placenta until 30+ hours after the birth! No blood loss, baby nursing, mom feels good....it was fine.

Unless the mom is bleeding or starting to become shocky (could be a sign of hidden blood loss), I would encourage waiting.

However, not every hospital based provider can sit around and wait for your body to produce the silly placenta! They have important things to do! Don't you know that?
/sarcasm
