My mother's 2 cats received rabies vax on saturday, and now one is in kidney failure. The vet isn't being very helpful in telling her whetehr or not it's vax related, or how to possibly report it.

Does anyone know if there is a vaccine injury reporting system for animals? Are vets required to record vax infor and release medical records like human doctors (I'm assuming they must record manufacturer and lot #s like for human vax, but maybe not?).

My mom is trying to decide what course of action to take, in regards to treating the cat and also reporting/recourse, as they did not tell her at all of possible side effects, and are not being terribly cooperative now.

Sadly I do not think there is a reporting system for animals ~ thus the reason this food recall issue with pets has been such a terrible thing. Had there been such a thing it is possible the recall could have been caught earlier seeing higher incidence of immediate kidney failure.

Yes, I do think it could be a vax reaction ~ assuming she has her on premium food and it is not a recalled food. Had your mother's cat had any symptoms of kidney failure prior to this? How old is the cat? Does she have any other medical problems?

i'm sorry. i have one with renal problems right now (don't know if vax related, only had her a couple months & from a private home), but the one i got from metro had her mandatory 'leave-the-shelter-with-it-or-stay-and-be-gassed' & for the ext two days seizured like nothing i've seen (plus, they gave it to her in the scruff, which vets are no longer supposed to do). it really is one o the more horrible vax (i understand our county has the worst rabies in the country, but maybe setting a limit of development and trapping/shooting rabid skunks would be more useful than repeatedly vaxxing an indoor cat).

i hope your mama's kitty gets better. it's harrowing and v sad. keep him/her hydrated and if it comes to that, i'll be using my nb fbs again after all
.

i wish the skeptics of the antivax (or limited vax) movement could've seen my cat flipping around the room. she was terrified. never, never would i put my kids in danger of that. and only in animals to save a life (get out of pound).

I don't know what food the cats eat, I'll have to check that. She/I didn't think of the food since she's been on the same food for a year, and the kidney issue started a day or so after the vax.

The cat is only 2 yrs, a female, no other problems other than a rough start in life, having a litter of kittens young and not being fed well. She had bloodwork and a clean bill of health within the year, a month or so after my mom got her.

Same food doesn't always equte no problem. The food company could have recently changed an ingredient or two ~ or could have just changed up where the ingredient was imported from.

As for the vax...it is possible that it was caused by a vax but getting any kind of reimbursement or proof would be hard (I would think) ~ harder than say getting funds from injuries from vaccines to children (which is very hard to do).

Keep us posted.
